Introducing the final artist in Anchor Points of the Heart, a 6-artist group exhibition opening tomorrow at the 100 Mile Arts Network Gallery & Boutique in the "heart" of Wakefield (address below) — including a posthumous presentation of the work of the late John Eaton.
John Eaton was born in Ottawa in 1942. He attended High Mowing School in New England, with special emphasis on painting and drawing. For three years following this he travelled in Europe, working in Yugoslavia and Greece and as an apprentice to a marble sculptor in Florence, Italy.
From 1961 to 1967 he had a studio in New York and taught drawing at the Waldorf School of Adelphi University. During this period, his pictures were used for multi-media poetry and dance recitals at Lincoln Center, the Donnell Library and the Cubiculo Theatre in New York. In 1965 he illustrated Fairy Tales by E.E. Cummings, published by Harcourt, Brace and World. In 1967 he assisted with the murals in the Pan-Am Building in New York.
In the late sixties, John Eaton moved to Rupert, Quebec, renewing his connection to the Gatineau Hills and pursuing his vocation as an artist for many years. In 2015, with the help of his partner, he began working daily on his biography and cataloguing his life's work. His sudden death from a heart attack, while riding his mountain bike with his horse Goya on his land, came as a shock to all who knew and loved him. His spirit now rests peacefully at home on the farm, surrounded by the beauty that animated and inspired him throughout his lifetime. His legacy will continue to echo through the Gatineau Hills.

John Eaton est né à Ottawa en 1942. Il a étudié à la High Mowing School en Nouvelle-Angleterre, où il s'est spécialisé en peinture et en dessin. Pendant les trois années suivantes, il a voyagé en Europe, travaillant en Yougoslavie et en Grèce, et comme apprenti sculpteur sur marbre à Florence, en Italie.
De 1961 à 1967, il possédait un atelier à New York et enseignait le dessin à l'école Waldorf de l'université Adelphi. À la fin des années soixante, John Eaton s'installe à Rupert, au Québec, renouant ainsi avec les collines de la Gatineau et se consacrant à sa vocation d'artiste pendant de nombreuses années. En 2015, avec l'aide de sa conjointe, il entreprend quotidiennement la rédaction de sa biographie et le catalogage de son œuvre. Sa mort subite, victime d'une crise cardiaque alors qu'il parcourait sa propriété à vélo de montagne avec son cheval Goya, bouleverse tous ceux qui l'ont connu et aimé.
Il est aujourd'hui reconnu pour une pratique artistique profondément enracinée dans l’exploration, le mouvement et la sensibilité au monde qui l’entourait. Son héritage demeure vivant et continue de résonner dans les collines de la Gatineau.
Son esprit repose désormais en paix à la ferme, entouré de toute la beauté qui l’a animé et inspiré tout au long de sa vie. Son œuvre et sa présence continuent d’habiter ce paysage avec force et délicatesse.
