🎬 In Between Wounds and Weavings Vol I: Fireflies in a Glass Jar & Friday Decides to Die ✨

Today, our emerging programmers are spotlighting two bold and thought-provoking short films by emerging Brazilian filmmaker Ailton Sinezio de Jesus 🇧🇷

🫙 Fireflies in a Glass Jar
On the day of his wedding, Robson returns to the house he once shared with his ex-boyfriend, Italo, revisiting memories, unresolved emotions, and the traces of a past love.

🗂️ Friday Decides to Die
Friday is ready to end her life, until she encounters a maze of petty bureaucracy that refuses to let her do it on her own terms. A darkly absurd reflection on autonomy, systems, and choice.

🎥 Ailton has worked on more than 40 short films and continues to build an exciting body of work, with directing credits including Torrente (2021), Centro, 67 (2022), A Costureira (2025), Fireflies in a Glass Jar (2025), and Friday Decides to Die (2025). He is currently studying Sound Engineering at Cuba’s renowned EICTV film school

✨ Introducing our 2026 VLAFF Emerging Programmers Cohort: Rodrigo Ferrat ✨

Rodrigo Ferrat is a Mexican filmmaker and critic based in Vancouver 🇲🇽🍁

As a critic for FICM and VIFF, Rodrigo has always been drawn to the hidden gems within festival programming 🎥🔍 Now, as an emerging programmer with VLAFF, he’s exploring the other side of the process: the challenge of filtering and curating films so audiences can discover those same powerful works ✨

Rodrigo is passionate about creating space for filmmakers who take necessary formal risks, stories that reveal overlooked realities, and cinematic practices that remind us film is art, not just content 🎬❤️‍🔥

As a Mexican programmer working with Latin American cinema in Canada, his curatorial approach is grounded in rigor, care, and respect: engaging with these films with the same seriousness and depth as any other cinema, without exoticizing or underestimating them 🌎📚

✨ Introducing our 2026 VLAFF Emerging Programmers Cohort: Pablo Betancourt ✨

Pablo is a multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and communications practitioner from the culturally rich Caribbean region of Colombia 🇨🇴 currently based in Canada 🍁

A 2022 film school graduate, Pablo’s work moves across film festivals, cultural programming, and artist-centered communications 🎞️📚 His interests lie in world cinema, memory, and the political and emotional power of storytelling, especially stories centering q***r, Indigenous, and underrepresented voices across Latin America and beyond 🌎❤️‍🔥
