The Virtual Reality Film Fest is the first VR film festival to take place in Canada, and one of the first in the world. The festival will take place in Vancouver, B.C., and is organized by a small group of individuals who are passionate about film and innovation. The Virtual Reality Film Fest is dedicated to supporting the act of storytelling through virtual reality films, and helping filmmakers t
o express their creativity through the next generation of media. The festival is organized in two sessions: the Filmmakers Workshop and the Screening and awards ceremony. Virtual reality (VR) films allow viewers to experience sensory immersion into a simulated visual environment. This is achieved using a VR headset that projects images to the eyes, the head can move in any direction, as in real life, to discover a virtual surrounding environment. Viewers can now feel that they are immersed in the movie - rather than merely viewing it. The Virtual Reality filmmaking industry is in its infancy; different companies are tackling the complex development for VR cameras including JauntVR, NextVR, Samsung, Google, GoPro, and only a few VR video channels are currently available such as VRideo, Lucidcam and youtube VR. The development of the VR camera is at a turning point, and we will soon see increasing consumer adoption of those new technologies with a growing number of people both creating and experiencing VR films. VR camera equipment can be difficult for filmmakers to obtain and very expensive to produce quality films with. We want to change that status quo at this festival by offering the selected filmmakers the opportunity to use state of the art equipment for their films.
