"I first met Cris at the Junos in Vancouver when she was playing for Tanya Tagaq back in 2009. I have always been impressed by their talents as a composer and cellist; but more than that, Cris was a fierce advocate for Indigenous people working in classical music. They created inspiring music and pushed us to do more and be better. We have lost a tremendous person. Cris, you will be missed."

The Chan Centre team is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Cris Derksen who passed away yesterday. Cris was a UBC School of Music graduate and served on the Chan Centre's artistic advisory board for five years. They also featured in the Chan Centre's digital Roots & Shoots program.

Our thoughts are with Cris' loved ones and the enormous musical community who mourns her loss.
