UBC Polish Club / Polish Students' Society - ŻAK The official page of the University of British Columbia Polish Club / Polish Students' Society - ŻA Annual membership is available.

This is formerly the official page of UBC's Polish Club / Polish Students' Society - ŻAK. Please check out our discussion group as well if you'd like to initiate discussion and reach out to the young Polonia community of BC: https://www.facebook.com/groups/UBCPolishClub/

The UBC Polish Club, formally known as the UBC Polish Students' Society ŻAK, was a cultural student club officially functioning

under the University of British Columbia's Alma Mater Society (AMS). The Polish Club was an affiliated member of the Canadian Polish Congress of British Columbia, a recognized member of the UBC Intercultural Alliance, and part of PISK (Polska Inicjatywa Studentów w Kanadzie)'s network of Canadian Polish student organizations. The mandate of the club is to promote Polish tradition, culture, and language through events involving Polish cuisine, film, as well as dialogue, social gatherings and other activities. The Polish Club also collaborates with other clubs to host and participate in larger, intercultural events and festivals. Some past and recurring UBC Polish Club events include:

Socials:
- Pub nights
- Club nights
- Group dinners
- Annual Polish Club party ("diskoteka")
- Glow-in-the-dark bowling nights

Cuisine:
- Kielbasa / pierogi-roasting beach campfires
- Baking and cooking events (pierogi, pastries, pączki)

Culture:
- Polish film nights
- Vancouver Polish Film Festival group gatherings

Adventures:
- Snowshoe hikes
- Skiing and snowboarding trips
- Ice-skating nights
- Scavenger hunts

The UBC Polish Club is open to all individuals, thus one does not have to be a UBC student, nor does one need to be Polish or know the Polish language to participate. Membership perks include event discounts, member-only events, and benefits such as VIP for Polish Club parties. The UBC Polish Club was also the primary host organization of the Quo Vadis Vancouver International Young Polonia Leadership Conference, happening in 2014. Quo Vadis is an annual, weekend-long gathering of young adults, students, and professionals of Polish heritage, aimed to foster leadership skills, reflect on one's roots, and to sustain a world-wide network of like-minded individuals. The age range of delegates is 18-40 years of age.

Hello Everyone!
I’m sad to say there are currently no plans or students at UBC, at this time, who have planned to take on the reigns of leading the UBC Polish Club.
As of right now, this is officially a community group.

01/20/2021

I am looking for admins to manage the UBC Polish Club page since it is no longer wise for an alum to oversee it.

It is not required for you to be Polish, but you must have an interest in the culture and community. Commitment is presently minimal. There are no recurring events led by UBC execs, so necessary duties are to oversee group posts and respond to incoming inquiries.

If you are interested in page management, please contact me with a very brief biography and why you are interested in the UBC Polish Club and running this group. BONUS if you are a current UBC student.

This group remains an important unit in the Polish community of UBC, Vancouver, and across Canada.

Dziekuje i narazie...

Hello everyone! We're looking for a fresh set of executives to help us run the UBC Polish Club for the 2015-2016 term. It's a perfect opportunity to gain experience managing various aspects of one of the most active cultural clubs at UBC. We're looking for executives who are keen on planning and participating in events (film nights, cooking events, fundraisers, intercultural fairs and parties, etc.), promoting the club on and off campus to maintain a connection between Polonia youth and Vancouver's Polonia, and working in a team environment with your fellow execs.

The environment is very casual and meetings are held on campus, usually once every 2-3 weeks for 30-60 minutes, and a bit more often when planning an event. We even have an office (which we'll try to reclaim for next year). ;)

Perks include chances to win scholarships and grants from Polish-Canadian community funds as well as a great piece of experience to put on your resume.

If interested, send an email to [email protected] by Monday, April 6, 2015 with a basic statement including your name, year, faculty, and why you're interested in becoming an executive. Also, you do NOT have to be Polish or speak Polish to join. :)

4-8 PM today. Global Lounge. Pizza, popcorn, and good company. Double-feature of awesome classic Polish films. There's no excuse not to come!

THE TWO MOVIES WE'LL BE SHOWING TONIGHT ARE:

"AMATOR" and "PRZYPADEK"!

Przypadek (Blind Chance): Released in 1987, the film presents three separate storylines, told in succession, about a man running after a train and how such an ordinary incident could influence the rest of the man's life. Originally filmed in 1981, Blind Chance was suppressed by the Polish authorities for several years until its delayed release in Poland on 10 January 1987. [To those who have seen Run Lola Run / Lola rennt, Przypadek was the inspiration to RLR].

Amator (Camera Buff): Released in 1979, the film is about a humble factory worker (Jerzy Stuhr) whose newfound hobby, amateur film, becomes an obsession, and transforms his modest and formerly contented life. Camera Buff won the Polish Film Festival Golden Lion Award and the FIPRESCI Prize and Golden Prize at the 11th Moscow International Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival Otto Dibelius Film Award in 1980.

We had an absolutely fantastic time at the UBCIA Intercultural Fair last Friday! Thanks to everyone who stopped by - we hoped you learned a bit about Polish culture and tried some delicious, authentic Polish food.

Many thanks to the Consulate of Poland in Vancouver for providing our booth with beautiful books about Chopin and Marie Curie-Skłodowska, as well as several information packets about travelling to Poland - something we totally recommend you do!

For the fair, our club ordered 600 pierogi, 10 litres of ogórki (pickles), and several links of kiełbasa straight from a local Polish deli. We also served kisiel and Tymbark juices! :) Hope everyone enjoyed the food! If anyone would like more information about ordering the authentic pierogi (or any of the food for that matter), we are more than happy to pass the contact information on.
