We are once again honoured to perform at the 2025 Fire Dragon Festival. Hundreds of people lined the streets of Vancouver’s Chinatown for this rare chance to see a live fire dragon performance — one of the few outside of its Hong Kong birthplace.

This year was extra special: the debut of the world’s first all-women fire dragon dance team, hoping to inspire more women and girls to connect with this age-old tradition. Huge thanks to our friends Hung Hsing Choy Lee Fut, Hoy Ping Kung Fu, Felixx Tom, and UBC Kung Fu Association for dancing the dragon to life with us.

We can’t wait to see you all again in 2026!

✨Daytime Highlights from Fire Dragon Festival 2025 🐉 ✨

The daytime programming of this year’s Fire Dragon Festival in Vancouver Chinatown brought together an incredible range of artists, organizers, and community groups who continue to deepen our shared connection to this place through creativity, care, and collaboration. 🌞💥

From hands-on artist workshops exploring both traditional and contemporary practices, to community booths offering space for dialogue, education, and reflection. This gathering reminded us of the strength in sharing art, stories, and experiences across generations. 🧧🎨👐

We’re deeply grateful to the artists who led workshops with openness and thoughtfulness. Their work invited people of all ages to engage with craft, memory, and movement in meaningful ways. 🖌️🎋

Thank you to the , whose presence reflects years of grassroots work and unwavering commitment to Chinatown’s social and cultural fabric. ❤️

And a heartfelt thank you to for hosting a dynamic community workshop in kung fu and lion dance offering participants a chance to learn, move, and connect with practices that have long been part of this neighborhood’s living tradition. 🐉🦁💪

These collective efforts are not just performances or displays, they’re acts of continuity, care, and relationship-building. We hold deep respect for everyone who contributed and made space for others to learn and participate with humility and intention.

Part of what Chau Luen Athletics is known for is our community workshops. In the afternoon leading up to the Fire Dragon Festival, we hosted another free kung fu and lion dance workshop for anyone visiting the talented artists and vendors sharing their crafts at Chinatown Plaza Mall.

The energy was infectious — visitors of all ages jumped in, learned some moves, and got a taste of the traditions we love sharing. In addition to teaching them the basics of lion dance and kung fu, the audience also got to see our talented students from the kids' class perform both lion and dragon dances, as well as a demonstration of some traditional Choy Lee Fut kung fu forms.

As always, our goal is that our involvement in these kind of events will bring Vancouver's Chinatown community closer and breathe more life into this historic neighbourhood. We hope this workshop gave participants a meaningful experience to take home with them, and we look forward to sharing more of these authentic moments with every workshop we do 🫶

The 2025 Fire Dragon Festival was yet another exciting chapter in the history of Vancouver’s cultural celebrations. This event served as a way to create a space for the community to come together – hundreds of spectators lined the streets, numerous news outlets covered the event, and an endless sea of smiles stretched from Carall to Columbia. This year’s celebrations saw the debut of the world’s first all-female Fire Dragon team that inspired young girls to connect with an ancient tradition. And it breathed more life into Chinatown, showing the passion and resilience that has defined this century-old neighbourhood.

The history of the Fire Dragon Festival itself dates back to the traditions of the Hong Kong Hakka, who have been performing this special dance to ward off evil spirits and disease, as well as bring blessings to their homeland, for over 200 years. With the help of our Hakka community members participating in the proceedings (special thanks to our friends Sunny and Haru), we hope to honour these traditions through our performances for years to come.

The Fire Dragon Festival would not have been possible without the generous support from our sponsors, the Government of Canada and .

We are also grateful to the tireless work done by our operations team, volunteers, artists, and performers, who came together in the name of the greater Chinatown community.

Specifically, we would like to thank , and the community volunteers that designed and crafted the 60-foot dragon. We would also like to acknowledge the dragon dance performers: , , , , , and community volunteers who took on the challenge of the dragon dance and made this unique performance come to life.

And lastly, we would like to thank , whose talents behind the camera highlighted the most spectacular parts of the performance.

The Fire Dragon Festival is best known for its iconic fire dragon dance, but that’s not the only thing happening on September 20.

In addition to being the festival’s featured performers alongside our kung fu friends, we'll also be hosting free lion dance and kung fu workshops on the same day. Starting at 2 pm in Chinatown Plaza Mall, this hands-on session is your chance to learn the basics, try out some moves, and experience traditional culture. Plus, test your luck at the Plinko board for a chance to win some fun prizes 🎁.

Don’t miss our workshop, as well as the other talented artists and activities that will be bringing the whole community together on the day of the festival.
