This Friday, we will be screening Once Upon a Time in a Cinema. Set in a cozy Irish town in the 1980s, the film follows Earl Clancy (played by the fantastic Colin Morgan), a cinema manager trying to survive the Friday night shift from absolute hell. In real tim, over the course of a single, chaotic 90-minute screening—Earl has to put out literal and figurative fires while deciding whether to sell his beloved theatre to a shady local politician.
On October 5th, we are screening At the Place of Ghosts. Eleven years in the writing, the story follows siblings Mise’l and Antle, close confidants in childhood who have drifted apart as adults. When a malevolent spirit begins tormenting them, the siblings are forced to reunite and journey into Sk+te’kmujue’katik, a primordial forest that exists outside of time, to confront the violence of their shared upbringing. Crafted by Two-Spirit, L’nu filmmaker Bretten Hannam from Kespukwitk, L’nuekati (Nova Scotia), the film masterfully weaves themes of community, culture, language, and Two-Spirit identity into a thrilling cinematic experience.
Before we start the film in October, we will also be screening the short film Buffalo, another Nova Scotian film. The film follows Michelle Tweed, an Indigenous drum maker based in Rockfield, Nova Scotia. We follow her as she crafts a drum using buffalo hide sourced from Verhagan Bison Farms. Michelle collaborates with students from the Pictou County Forestry School to create this drum, highlighting the power of community learning alongside Mother Nature and the spirit of the land. This journey brings people together, culminating in a celebration where handmade drums are presented to the Verhagen family.
