Toronto, Motorista, and the entire Viva La Leaside community are heartbroken by the passing of Ernie Lee โ a true legend of the skies, and the soul behind what was to be one of this yearโs most iconic attractions: the hot air balloon experience.
Ernie began flying hot air balloons in 1974. For over five decades, he brought joy, awe, and a sense of wonder to tens of thousands of people across the world. From Canada to Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, and the United States, his career was nothing short of airborne artistry.
He flew corporate and special-shape balloons for brands such as Re/Max, Pizza Pizza, Yellow Pages, Labattโs, Ericsson, and Enbridge Consumers Gas. In 2001, he piloted the largest passenger balloon in the world โ a 415,000 cubic foot marvel capable of carrying 30 passengers โ over the skies of Holland. From 2008 to 2010, Ernie returned to Europe with the crowd-favorite T-Rex balloon, a towering dinosaur that delighted festival-goers of all ages.
Beyond the skies, Ernie had another love: Jaguar cars. His appreciation for craftsmanship, elegance, and performance echoed both in his garage and in every takeoff he led.
Viva La Leaside 2025 was set to feature Ernieโs balloon rides โ a dream experience for many. But in light of this deeply saddening loss, the hot air balloon will not be flying this year. Instead, we dedicate the entire festival in Ernieโs honour.
We fly a little lower this year, but our spirits rise with gratitude and admiration for a man who spent his life lifting others โ both literally and metaphorically.
Ernie, thank you for painting our skies with wonder.
This festival is for you. ๐๏ธ
