Ancient Jewish tale "The Cave of Candles"

The Plot Summary:

The tale follows a man who spends his entire life traveling the world in search of absolute justice and fairness. After years of witnessing cruelty and inequality, he finds himself lost in a dark, mysterious forest where he discovers a hidden cottage.

Inside, he meets an old man tending to thousands of flickering oil candles on endless shelves. The old man explains that each candle represents a human soul. As long as a person is alive, their candle burns; when the oil runs out, the person dies.

The traveler asks to see his own candle. The old man guides him deep into the room and points to a clay holder containing a flickering candle with a very short wick and almost no oil left. Terrified by his impending death, the traveler waits until the old man looks away. Desperate for fairness and more time, he grabs a nearby candle overflowing with oil and prepares to tilt it to pour oil into his own lamp.

Just as he is about to steal the oil, the old man suddenly reappears, grips his arm tightly, and asks: “Is this the kind of justice you seek?”

How do you think the story ends?

(This is a fragment of the lecture on world fairytales by Professor Anna Shternshis).
