Roles for trans and non-binary characters are disappearing from our screens. In 2025, of the 225 films released by the top 10 distributors only seven included a non-binary character and not one included a trans character, according to GLAAD.

ACTRA members spoke to CBC News in a new investigation about what that loss means, both for performers and for audiences, amid a troubling rise in anti-trans rhetoric.

Early this morning, we learned of the tragic passing of Eric Bauza. On behalf of ACTRA Toronto – of which Eric was a member for almost 25 years – we would like to share our deepest condolences to Eric's family and friends. While fans will remember and dearly miss Eric's dazzling talent, his memory will live on in the countless performances he gave to this world. The voice community in Toronto, Los Angeles and abroad are all mourning the loss of a friend, described by many as kind and generous. We at ACTRA Toronto knew this well. In spring 2024, Eric brought his story of animation glory to our Voice Committee, a memory that will be cherished. He was and will remain a mentor to those who carry his legacy forward. May he rest in peace. ~ACTRA Toronto President Kate Ziegler

Our work, our rights, our future.

Right now, performers have no AI protections in commercial contracts. ACTRA Toronto Members are changing that, together.

The ACTRA Toronto AI Committee is sharing a simple yet powerful rider you can negotiate into your commercial contracts. It's built on the three C's: consent, control and compensation. It also goes further, to prevent your likeness and voice from being used to train generative AI models.

Let's ride together. 🏍️

ACTRA Toronto is proud to be sponsoring The Path to Building an English Canada Star System at the 2026 Reelworld Summit on Oct. 20th at 11 a.m.!

Recent disruptions have made one thing clear: Canada must strengthen its ability to build audiences for its own stories, both at home and around the world. We have the talent, creators, and extraordinary stories—but not enough infrastructure connecting them with the audiences who could become their greatest advocates. This panel delves into the Reelworld Phase 1 report Findings and Strategic Framework of building a Star System for English Canada, funded by Canada Media Fund. The report maps the ecosystem surrounding English-Canadian screen talent and identifies the gaps limiting actors’ visibility and audience growth. Get a first look at the report and explore what it will take to turn Canadian talent into household names.

The panel features ACTRA Toronto Members K.C. Collins and Tonya Williams, alongside Mansa Chintoh, Lauren Jacob and Seema Jethalal.
