THE OATH
a play by Victoria Dawe and Sue Drummond

The Oath is a post-apocalyptic, downtown Toronto, two street gang, rock musical adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. Life in Toronto is precarious and deadly; gangs prowl the streets. MAGGIE, a seemingly middle-aged bag lady version of Clotho, one of the Greek fates, aided by her adopted , street rat, son,

SAL, has the task of fostering the painful process of rebuilding civilization. Two youth gangs, SPROG and SHARD, fight and scramble to survive. JORDYN, a female member of Sprog, refuses to accept that violence is the only solution. This high energy, rock musical comedy transforms an ancient story into an accessible modern battle of the sexes. The vibrant language, invented slang and idiosyncratic characters pull the audience into this futuristic world. The Oath is a fabulous story with fights, songs, magic and dancing. Directed by Victoria Dawe and Michelle Soicher

A Review from Mr.Reid

Dear Victoria and Michelle:

What a great opening night and production of The Oath! Congratulations to you and everyone involved.

From the moment I entered the auditorium, I knew I was in for a good time. The set and lighting were stunning and the band was hot. In fact, the set was very striking and I loved the way you used the sides of the stage so effectively, particularly in the second half when in the one scene we were turning our heads from one side to the other to follow the dialogues.

The music was great - koodos to Quinton - and the band did a great job. I loved the post-modern touch of bringing them into the play at various points and particularly liked how you left the "dead guy" out of those scenes. They acted really well, too. I know they were acting because Jordana is in my English class and nobody orders that girl around!

Technically it was a fine production. The sound and lighting crews were spot on. The lighting crew hit the cues perfectly especially with Maggie's finger snaps. I loved the hairdos and the costumes, too, particularly Maggie's. She reminded me of a girlfriend a long, long time ago. I think her name was Tree.

The actors did a great job with their roles, the songs and the dancing, and they shook any jitters they may have had pretty quickly. You could tell that the audience loved their performances as they got a lot of laughs. I am sure they will be more comfortable with each performance.

Please extend my congratulations to all involved on such a fun production that maintains Earl Haig's fine reputation for the arts: Caterina, Camille and Ann; Rob, Len and Thomas; Pam; James and Lorraine; Alan and Brian; all the crews; the band; and, of course, the actors.

I am sure everyone will have a great time Thursday and Friday Nights.

Best wishes,
David Reid
