THE OATH
a play by Victoria Dawe and Sue Drummond
The Oath is a post-apocalyptic, downtown Toronto, two street gang, rock musical adaptation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. Life in Toronto is precarious and deadly; gangs prowl the streets. MAGGIE, a seemingly middle-aged bag lady version of Clotho, one of the Greek fates, aided by her adopted , street rat, son, SAL, has the task of fostering the painful process of rebuilding civilization. Two youth gangs, SPROG and SHARD, fight and scramble to survive. JORDYN, a female member of Sprog, refuses to accept that violence is the only solution. This high energy, rock musical comedy transforms an ancient story into an accessible modern battle of the sexes. The vibrant language, invented slang and idiosyncratic characters pull the audience into this futuristic world. The Oath is a fabulous story with fights, songs, magic and dancing. Directed by Victoria Dawe and Michelle Soicher
