Follow us on instgram The Army Navy and Air Force Veterans Incorporated Association was formed in Stratford on th 25th of May 1937 with 25 Members who had served in the Great War 1914-1918. Meetings at that time were held in the board rooom at City Hall until a decision was made to purchase a permant club room. Unfor

tunately it was destroyed by fire on the 13th of March 1948. Temporary quarters were obtained from the Optimist Club on Water Street and again a committee was formed to raise money and find a permant quarters for the Unit. At this time the former stables of the Hargarty Commercial Hotel at 33 Brunswick Street was for sale and was quickly purchased. With a lot of volunteer labour the building was quickly put into operating condition and became the permanent home of Unit 261until New Years Eve 1980 when a disasterous fire once again destroyed the Unit's club rooms. Once more, the motto, Shoulder to Shoulder, came into effect and with everyone working together to raise funds and assit where possible our club rooms were rebuilt on the same site. In the year 2000 the city approached the Unit to purchase the building for the Festival. So once again a committee was formed. The committee approached the Knights of Columbus as they were looking to sell their building and build a smaller one. On Labour Day weekend August 28 2000 we moved with the overwhelming help and support of the Members. The Ladies Auxiliary also played a big part in this move being succsesful, on May 9 2009 we had a Morgage burning ceremony. The Stratford Unit became InCorperated on June 21, 2005. We have an excellent facility, which stands as a credit to the community and City of Stratford. Our motto is Shoulder to Shoulder and we, the Executive and Members of Unit 261, extend a welcome to all Veterans, Ex-Service personel and the Community to visit our facility at 151 Lorne Avenue East. Unit 261 is very active in the community; sponsoring Minor Hockey, Minor Baseball, Youth Soccer, Ontario Special Olympics, Youth Development, as well as a host of community projects and charities. This is th 175th Anniversary of the A.N.A.F Veterans in Canada, formed in 1840, by an Act of Parliment. Also , ANAF Veterans Unit 261 is celebrating its 78th year as a Unit.

I was honoured to attend the 117th Annual Review of 223 Perth County Royal Canadian Army Cadets Corp as the Reviewing Officer June 3rd. The 223 is one of the oldest youth groups in Perth County and one of the longest serving Army Cadet corps in the province. The left photo, I am presenting Master Warrant Officer C. Wilmore with a cheque for $1,000.00 from ANAF Unit 261 to help out the cadet program. The second photo I had the privilege to present the Lord Strathcona award to Sgt. L. Wansbutter. The Lord Strathcona Medal is one of the highest awards which can be bestowed upon a cadet/JCR. It is awarded annually to cadets/JCRs to recognize exemplary performance in physical training as well as their service, performance, example and excellence as a cadet/JCR.
