📍 Witless Bay | June 7, 2026

A guided walk hosted by Aquatic Conservation Initiative and Nature Newfoundland and Labrador brought participants together to explore the stunning Witless Bay coastline. With sunshine and fresh ocean air - a true gift from the ocean - the group learned about coastal morphology, seabirds and other wildlife, native plants, and the impacts affecting marine environments.

The relaxed 3 km hike from the Witless Bay Trail Head welcomed participants of all ages, with plenty of opportunities to pause, learn, and enjoy some beachcombing along the way. From fascinating coastal features to wildlife sightings and great conversations, it was a fin-tastic day of connecting with nature and appreciating the beauty of our ocean and shore!

💙An Incredible Community Effort for Our Ocean! 🐚

Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative and the Gros Morne Piranhas Swim Team came together for a celebration that combined action, community and a whole lot of shoreline pride! Volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a shoreline cleanup in Wild Cove that helped protect local coastal habitats - while supporting a fundraiser for the Gros Morne Piranhas 🏊‍♀️

Over 300 lbs of marine debris was collected, helping to keep our shoreline cleaner and healthier for all! 🧤🌊

🌊🎉 World Oceans Day Family Fun Makes a Splash in Twillingate! 🎉🌊

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Twillingate Lions Club welcomed families and community members to a fun-filled World Oceans Day celebration!

Visitors dove into hands-on ocean discovery with a saltwater aquarium and touch tank, explored interactive exhibits, stepped aboard a fisheries patrol boat, and enjoyed fun games and activities for all ages. From curious young explorers to lifelong ocean lovers, there was something for everyone!

One of the biggest highlights of the day? The crowd-favorite dunk tank, where courageous Fishery Officers took the plunge to the delight of cheering spectators! Good thing they had their survival gear on! 💦😄

🌊 A Wave of Learning, Culture & Celebration: World Ocean Day 2026 on the West Coast of Newfoundland 🌊

🌊 A wave of excitement swept through Corner Brook as more than 500 students from 25 classes, alongside community members, gathered for a full day of hands-on learning, cultural celebration, and ocean-inspired discovery!

From getting up close with marine life and learning about ocean conservation to exploring cultural exhibits, community initiatives, and safety demonstrations, there was something around every corner to spark curiosity and inspire action.

🌊 370 Pounds of Marine Debris Removed - An incredible day of action! 🌊

📍 Trout River | June 4, 2026

More than 60 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and joined forces for a community beach cleanup. Students from Jakeman All Grade, along with Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative, Parks Canada, the River Guardians, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transform Gros Morne, Bonne Bay Aquarium & Research Station interpreters, and local residents worked side by side to help keep our shoreline clean.

Together, they removed an impressive 370 pounds of marine debris from the coastline, including beverage cans, coffee cups, lobster bands, rope, cigarette butts, and other litter that can harm marine life and coastal habitats.

On June 4th we held our first annual beach cleanup in Trout River. We had over 60 volunteers including the students of Jakeman All Grade, Parks Canada, the River Guardians, C&P Officers from DFO, visitors from Transform Gros Morne, the Interpreters from the Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station and many more.

In total we collected 370lbs of marine debris which ranged from beverage cans, takeout coffee cups, hundreds of rubber lobster bands and cigarette butts, fishing rope and much more. Trout River now has a clean coastline and its thanks to all these Ocean Heros!! So THANK YOU for all your hard work.

🤝Connecting Communities - Bar Bridge Cleanup🤝

📍 Clarenville | June 9, 2026

Volunteers from the Towns of Clarenville and Georges Brook- Milton came together with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to clean up the shoreline around the Bar Bridge - the causeway connecting Random Island to Clarenville.

This important stretch of coastline acts as a natural catchment area for marine debris, but thanks to a strong community leadership, the area was left noticeably cleaner and healthier. Together, participants helped protect local wildlife, improved coastal habitats, and took meaningful action for the ocean right on their doorstep!

A great example of what can be achieved when communities work side by side for the ocean and the places we call home 🌊💙

🧁🐙 Sea-riously Creative! A Sweet Tribute to the Ocean 🐋🧁

To raise awareness about the importance of World Oceans Day, the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) partnered with Clover Farm St. Alban's to sponsor a marine-themed cupcake decorating contest. 🐠🐙🐳

From sea creatures and shells to underwater scenes, these cupcakes were bursting with imagination and ocean spirit. A huge congratulations to everyone who participated and helped spread the message of ocean appreciation in such a fun and delicious way. 💙🧁

🌊 The Celebration Continues!🌊

The excitement of Ocean Week and World Oceans Day is still making waves across Newfoundland and Labrador! From community gatherings and educational experiences to family-friendly activities and ocean-inspired adventures, people throughout the province have been coming together to celebrate our connection to the ocean. 💙

As we look back on some of the incredible events and initiatives that took place, we're kicking off our highlights with an event that brought students from Port aux Basques and Burnt Islands up close and personal with one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most iconic species - the lobster! 🦞

Working alongside ACAP Humber Arm, Fisheries and Oceans Canada Fishery Officers, and local fish harvesters, students took part in a hands-on learning experience where they pulled lobster traps, measured lobster, learned how to identify males and females, and discovered why sustainable fishing practices are so important.

From ghost gear and escape hatches to releasing undersized lobster and protecting future generations through v-notching reproductive females, students gained valuable insight into the stewardship that helps keep our lobster fishery healthy for years to come.

Experiences like these help inspire the next generation of ocean stewards while connecting youth to the people, industries, and ecosystems that shape our coastal communities. 💙🦞

As our flagship World Oceans Day celebrations come to a close, we’ve been reflecting on what made this year so special - and it all comes down to people!

To every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and enthusiasm to our flagship events, Thank You! Whether you were greeting visitors at the door, helping children discover the wonders of the ocean, sharing knowledge at touch tanks, or working behind the scenes, you helped create an experience that people will remember long after the day ended. We simply couldn’t have done it without you. 💙

We also want to extend our sincere thanks to the many individuals, community groups, organizations, presenters, performers, and partners from across Newfoundland and Labrador who helped bring Ocean Week and World Oceans Day to life. Your passion for our oceans and coastal communities was evident in every activity, conversation, and event!

While the majority of celebrations are wrapping up, their are still more unfolding. Over the next few days, as we receive their pictures and videos, we’ll continue sharing photos, memories, and highlights from World Oceans Day events across the province!
