There’s so much more to singing than simply learning to sing the right notes. 🎶

At SAM, we want our singers to understand their voices, think like musicians, and develop the technical skills to express what they want to say through music.

That means learning healthy, sustainable vocal technique alongside musicianship, ear training, pitch, music reading and an understanding of how different styles call for different choices. 👌

Nothing excites us more than hearing a singer make an intentional choice about the sound they want to create and then having the technical skills and control to actually make it happen.

Whether a student is working toward an exam or festival, preparing for a musical theatre performance, singing with an ensemble, or simply becoming a more confident singer, we meet them where they are and help them grow from there.

🎸 More than learning songs. We’re building musicians.

At SAM, guitar is about developing the skills, understanding, and confidence to make music for life. Students build strong technical foundations from rhythm and fretboard fluency to tone and articulation while developing their musical vocabulary, creativity, and their own unique musical voice and style.

Our guitar program explores a wide range of styles, including classical & RCM-aligned study, jazz, folk fingerpicking, and contemporary sing-and-strum approaches. Whether your goal is to play for yourself, perform, or make music with others, we help students become versatile, confident musicians.

And because music is meant to be shared, performance and collaboration are an important part of the journey from relaxed studio recitals to community events and opportunities to play with others. 🎶

🎸 Meet Madeleine! 🎶

Madeleine first joined Squamish Academy of Music at age 9, starting in group singing classes where her love of voice quickly emerged. As her confidence grew, SAM supported her in expanding her musical expression through guitar, giving her the tools to accompany herself while singing. 🎶

She began guitar lessons with a student teacher who shared her love of singing and strumming, building that connection between voice and instrument from the very beginning. As her musicianship developed, Madeleine also explored electric bass, eventually bringing her skills into band camps and ensemble experiences where rhythm, collaboration, and musical connection took centre stage.

Through SAM’s progression from group learning to individualized instruction, Madeleine continued developing her guitar technique, rhythm skills, and ability to sing while playing, eventually exploring more advanced musicianship, including rhythm and lead guitar.

Today, Madeleine has come full circle as a student teacher at SAM, sharing her experience and passion with young guitar and ukulele students. She also performs regularly with local bands and ensembles and has been featured at Amped in the Park and the Business Excellence Awards, where she performed a full solo, self accompanied set. ✨

Madeleine has limited availability for new guitar and ukulele students this September. If your child is ready to learn an instrument, build confidence, and discover the joy of making music, this is a great time to get started! 🤩

At SAM, we believe singing is about so much more than hitting the right notes or making a bigger sound. It’s about developing a healthy, sustainable voice and learning how to use it with confidence, artistry, and expression. 🎶

Our singers build strong vocal technique and musicianship while exploring a wide range of styles, from classical and musical theatre to contemporary music. Along the way, they develop skills in ear training, sight reading, pitch, phrasing, articulation, resonance, and musical interpretation.

Most importantly, technique is always in service of expression. Students learn to make intentional choices with tone, colour, text, and phrasing so they can communicate meaningfully with their listeners.

Every voice and every musical journey is unique. Whether the goal is an exam, festival, performance, musical theatre, ensemble singing, or simply becoming a more confident singer, we meet students where they are and help them discover and develop their own sound. ✨

If your child loves to move, sing, and perform, this collaborative camp brings together the best of both worlds.
Students explore favourite musical theatre repertoire while developing vocal technique, expressive movement, and performance skills. Led by instructors from Squamish Academy of Music and Squamish Dance Centre, the week culminates in a fun showcase celebrating everything they’ve learned.
Whether your child is brand new to performing or already has experience on stage, they’ll be challenged, encouraged, and inspired in a positive, collaborative environment.

Fall Group Class Registration for school aged students opens tomorrow at noon!

Group classes at the Squamish Academy of Music offer a welcoming and engaging way for musicians to begin or expand their musical journey. These classes are thoughtfully designed to spark curiosity, develop foundational skills, and nurture confidence within a supportive group setting.

Students learn through fun, interactive lessons that balance musicianship, creativity, and collaboration, so that they can feel successful early on and stay motivated to keep learning. With opportunities to perform, high-quality instruction, and a strong sense of community, our group classes help students explore music in a kind and joyful environment, while also laying the groundwork for long-term growth.
