They will be ready for pickup between mid- April through June

The planting time for sweet potatoes is late May and through June, when the soil has thoroughly warmed up
These plants produce delicious sweet orange fleshed sweet potatoes. In a good year we average 7.5 lbs per plant, with many plants yielding way more than this with lots of big tubers.

This variety performs well in our climate and is high yielding in the appropriate conditions.

Sweet potatoes are an easy crop to grow if you provide the following:

!00% full sun (no shade at all)

Well composted garden beds

Plastic mulch (black or clear)

Regular water

We space our plants in double rows 16" apart, and plants 16" apart in each row.

They can also be planted as far apart as 2 feet in the centre of the bed, but the 16" spacing offers a good harvest with big and medium tubers.

They require more heat than other crops. If you can ripen tomatoes, you can grow sweet potatoes. Even better if you can ripen melons.

They are ready to be harvested before first fall frost.

At this time you:

Cut the vines (livestock love these succulent vines)

Carefully dig the sweet potatoes (they can really anchor themselves into the soil- especially clay soil)

Harvest into boxes.

Immediately upon harvest, bring the boxes into a preheated room at 30-32 celsius (a closet or bathroom with a heater works well)

Cover the boxes loosely with plastic and cure for 1 week

This curing process starts the conversion of starches to sugars, and helps the sweet potatoes to store properly for up to 2 years!

They need to be stored at or above 13 celsius, in boxes loosely covered with plastic.

They will start being delicious by Halloween, and will peak in flavour by Christmas.
