🏆 A very special recognition for Día de los Mu***os Atlantic Canada
We are deeply honoured to share that Día de los Mu***os Atlantic Canada has been named Event of the Year – Under $100,000 at Event Atlantic 's 2026 Excellence Awards.
This recognition means so much to us because this festival has always been about more than an event. It is about art, culture, community, and creating something meaningful together.
What began as a vision to share and celebrate Día de los Mu***os in Atlantic Canada has grown into a community celebration made possible by artists, performers, volunteers, partners, sponsors, and, most importantly, the people who continue to show up and embrace it.
While this award carries the name of our festival, it belongs to everyone who has helped bring it to life.
A special thank you to Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency for believing in the value of our work. We are grateful for your support and for the work you do to celebrate the people and events that make our region vibrant.

Alebrije Workshop · Cartonería Technique

Join us for this incredible workshop where you'll learn the technique of cartonería. Over five evenings we'll learn it together, the Mexican art of bringing paper to life, and we won't be making practice pieces. As a group we'll create five alebrijes that will be exhibited as part of the Día de los Mu***os celebrations in Saint John.

You'll learn the full process: cooking the paste, building the armature, layering the paper, drying, sealing, and the polychrome finish with those bold colours and the fine dotwork that gives an alebrije its character. Paper, paste and paint, just as the master cartoneros of Mexico City do it.

Alebrijes were born nearly a century ago from Pedro Linares's dream. Now they'll be born here, made by the hands and the community of Salisbury and New Brunswick as a whole.

Atelier d'Alebrijes · Technique de cartonería

Nous vous attendons pour cet atelier exceptionnel où vous apprendrez la technique de la cartonería. Pendant cinq soirées, nous l'apprendrons ensemble, l'art mexicain de donner vie au papier, et nous ne ferons pas de simples exercices. Ensemble, nous créerons cinq alebrijes qui seront exposés dans le cadre des festivités du Día de los Mu***os à Saint John.

Vous apprendrez tout le processus : préparer la colle, monter l'armature, superposer les couches de papier, le séchage, le scellement et la polychromie, avec ces couleurs vives et ce pointillé qui donnent tout son caractère à l'alebrije. Du papier, de la colle et de la peinture, comme le font les maîtres cartoneros de Mexico.

Les alebrijes sont nés il y a près d'un siècle du rêve de Pedro Linares. Ils naîtront désormais ici, façonnés par les mains et la communauté de Salisbury et du Nouveau-Brunswick tout entier.

Taller de Alebrijes · Técnica de Cartonería

Te esperamos en este increíble taller donde aprenderás la técnica de la cartonería, durante cinco tardes vamos a aprender juntos la cartonería, el arte mexicano de dar vida al papel, y no vamos a hacerlo con piezas de práctica. Entre todos elaboraremos cinco alebrijes que serán exhibidos como parte de las festividades del Día de los Mu***os en Saint John.

Aprenderás el proceso completo: preparar el engrudo, armar la estructura, encolar las capas de papel, el secado, el sellado y la policromía con esos colores intensos y el punteado que le da carácter a un alebrije. Papel, engrudo y pintura, igual que los maestros cartoneros de la Ciudad de México.

Los alebrijes nacieron hace casi un siglo del sueño de Pedro Linares. Ahora van a nacer aquí, hechos por manos y comunidad de Salisbury y New Brunswick en general

We are so proud of the young artists at Macdonald Consolidated School!
It was a joy to work alongside these incredible students to create the Mural of Memories and Honouring through Make Art, a wellness-based public art initiative presented by Sugar Skulls Atlantic Celebration Inc. as part of the Dia de los Mu***os, Atlantic Canada Festival 2026.
Inspired by Alebrijes and monarch butterflies, symbols of transformation, imagination, resilience, and hope each student created artwork to honour someone special in their life. Together, they transformed personal stories into a vibrant mural celebrating remembrance, healing, and community.
Projects like this shows the power of art to connect people, strengthen communities, and celebrate culture.
A heartfelt thank you to the students and staff at Macdonald Consolidated School for embracing this project with such enthusiasm.
We are also grateful to Arts Culture NB for its support and to the Anglophone South School District for its partnership in making this initiative possible.
