While the Pacific International Cup is not returning, the legacy of our event will live on, as well our leader, Jim Schuman (JAWS).

Working with Lyle Seig, the Chair of Curl BC and a former participant in the Pacific International Cup, and Scott Braley, the CEO of Curl BC, the Board of Governors of Curl BC has now unanimously passed the following motion.

"Whereas, James Arthur William Schuman (1942-2024) is recognized for his contribution to the sport of curling and the growth and development of club curling locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally; and

Whereas Jim was an inspiring leader, an unselfish giver, and passionate about club curling; and

Whereas Jim, as a founder and volunteer chair of the Pacific International Cup for 20 years, directly influenced club curling, not only in British Columbia, but around the world; and

Whereas the Pacific International Cup Legacy Committee has donated its remaining funds of $62,910 to recognize and commemorate Jim’s contribution to curling in BC,

Be it resolved that Curl BC establish a program and a supporting fund called the “Jim Schuman Curling Club Assistance Program” as a vehicle to lend money to affiliated curling facilities in financial need. Curl BC’s CEO and the Curl BC Finance & Audit Committee will manage and operate the fund under program guidelines established and maintained by the Board of Governors. The guidelines will ensure that the program provides direct support to curling clubs and club curling, helps to satisfy a demonstrated need in the curling club community, and is named after Jim Schuman in perpetuity."

Thanks to all of you, our friend, JAWS will be around for a long time to come in curling clubs in British Columbia and will continue to positively impact them in perpetuity. It has been our privilege to work on this on your behalf.

Sincerely,

The Pacific International Cup

The Executive Committee of the Pacific International Cup is very sad to announce that the final rock has been thrown in our international club curling event. In 1999 we created a vision of being the premier curling event in the world for the development of the sport at the grass roots level providing BC club champions and international teams with an opportunity to showcase their skills and participate in a unique competition. From the taking of the “opening shot” in our inaugural event in 2000 until now, we have worked hard to stay true to that vision and to provide our guests, curlers from British Columbia and around the world, with an unparalleled curling event experience.

We would like to thank the Richmond Curling Club, our partner and the permanent host of the Pacific International Cup, for providing an excellent curling facility and a great array of services for our memorable banquet and casino nights. We thank our many dedicated sponsors whose generous donations enabled the event to ensure our quality of experience goals were achieved. We thank the City of Richmond, the Richmond Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and our pipers and anthem singer for our memorable opening and closing ceremonies. We thank our family of volunteers, virtually all of whom were with us from the first day – your loyalty and hard work year after year made the Pacific International Cup operate seamlessly from opening registration through to the crowning of the Champions.

Most of all we would like to thank our very special guests, the club curlers from British Columbia, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, China, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Singapore and India who were truly the stars of the Pacific International Cup. You contributed in so many ways demonstrating great curling, superb sportsmanship, unlimited enthusiasm for our sport and your lifelong friendship. You created so many curling and Pacific International Cup special memories that made the PIC the world class experience it was.

While it was a very difficult decision to reach the conclusion that we could no longer continue to provide the club curlers from around the world the unique curling and social experience that the Pacific International Cup was, we will be forever proud of what we accomplished. Thank you for being part of the Pacific International Cup!

Hi all,

It's been sometime we have posted here, and it's time your social media coordinator update the current status of the Pacific International Cup.

Unfortunately, due to several issues beyond our control, we were unable to host the PIC in 2023 as intended after COVID.

However, we are in discussion to host the 2024 Pacific International Cup, our 21st edition, on April 10-14, 2024.

There are still a number of issues we will need to continue to work out before we will be able to finalize our event. However, we are confident that we will be able to host our event in 2024.

We are planning to send out invitations in September to the various state/provincial/national organizations who have expressed interest in participating in the PIC.

We hope to see all of you again in April 2024!

Greetings

Two years with no PIC has been very painful – it has been the curling highlight of the year for most of us. We have missed the renewal of old friendships, the pleasure of meeting new curling friends and the curling camaraderie, sportsmanship and joy of spending time with club curlers from around the world. The spirit of the PIC is built on the curlers and volunteers who participate and that is what has made it the best international club curling championship in the world.

We earnestly had hoped we would not have to make yet a third PIC cancellation but it is with extreme regret we advise that there will not be a 2022 Pacific International Cup. Although no one is claiming to be able to accurately predict the status of the pandemic and Canadian health orders and restrictions that would affect the PIC, we have determined it is highly unlikely that there will be a complete “return to normal” regarding international travel and indoor sports activities by April 2022.

It would require clairvoyance to guarantee that there will be no travel restrictions by April 2022, and we do not have clairvoyance. With winter being the season favoured by respiratory viruses to spread, we also cannot predict with any certainty that British Columbia and Canada will not still have in place regulations requiring limitations of various kinds for indoor activities. The ability to socialize during the Pacific International Cup without any restraints is an important aspect of the event for all participants, player and volunteers alike. Additionally with the city of Richmond installing a new ice plant, it is also unclear at present whether all the amenities necessary for a successful PIC will be available by April 2022.

It is with much regret that we have cancelled the 2022 Pacific International Cup.

On a positive note, April 2023 will be upon us in less than 18 months.

Regards,
Jim Schuman
Chair, Pacific International Cup

We have an update for all curlers and friends of the Pacific International Cup from the PIC Organizing Committee.

Dear friends,

The Committee for the Pacific International Cup has been in discussion for the last several weeks and we have come to the difficult and sad decision to cancel the 2021 Pacific International Cup scheduled for this upcoming April.

With the restrictions in travel as well as all the other protocols restricting activities during this pandemic, we felt that, even if we could host you, we could not run the Pacific International Cup in a manner that you would expect from us, and as much as we would expect from ourselves. And while we are hopeful, as is the rest of the world, that by sometime in 2021 we will have this pandemic under control, there is too much uncertainty at this time to host the event until 2022.

We have reached out to the various associations who submit teams to our event in the past and advised them of their options for returning to us in 2022. We have also reached out to all our sponsors and we hope to have all of you and more join us for what we hope will be the greatest Pacific International Cup in 2022.

With this decision, we would like all of you to contribute ideas and suggestions on how we could make the PIC 2022 the greatest return to the best of club curling that we have ever seen.

And for those associations who haven't joined us in the past, please contact us on how you can join us in 2022. We're going to have an event unlike anything we have done before, and we hope you can join us!

If you have any questions, please contact us through our social media or via our webpage at picup.ca.

We hope to stay in touch and see you in April of 2022!

Sincerely,

The PIC Committee

Good morning everyone!

Just a short update for all of you today. We are still planning for the 2021 version of the Pacific International Cup for next spring.

Right now with all the uncertainty of this global pandemic, we cannot absolutely state if we will be able to host our event on time or not.

What we can tell you is that we are planning on hosting our event, as well as developing contingency plans if we do need to reschedule the 2021 PIC. In the weeks ahead we will be contacting our sponsors, partners and participants to keep you informed about our plans for the PIC.

We hope to see you next April... and if circumstances prevent us from doing so then, we will see you again as soon as we can safely have you join us in the future.

In the words of B.C.'s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry... "Be kind, be calm and be safe." And we will see you soon!

Congratulations to our friends down in Southern California! Good luck with building your new rink!

A year ago we were a proud PIC Committee, & most of us have been a part of this for so many years, alongside the original leaders of 21 years now.
We’ll miss being together for PIC 2020 with all our curlers from near & so far, people we call our friends in our curling family.
As hard as this is, for us Volunteers, the staff, the Sponsors, or the Teams who would’ve been here, with their families cheering, yes I’m sure we’re all missing that connection of being at RCC this week for the next 5 days.
The PIC has been a great event with countless memories, good times, lots of laughs & awesome curling, that I’ve captured with thousands of photos on & off the ice, through the years.
Meanwhile stay safe, stay healthy, & with everyone doing their part to stay home, we’ll get through this so we can get together again, for the 2021 P.I.C. Championship ~ Yadranka

We have an update for all curlers and friends of the Pacific International Cup from the PIC Committee.

Dear Friends:

After careful consultation with local and provincial health authorities and the curling governing bodies, we have determined it is in the best interest to cancel the 2020 Pacific International Cup due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was the most difficult we have had to make in our 21 year history but the health and well-being of our participants, volunteers, the host club staff and our guests remains the top priority.

We would like to thank you all for your support and look forward to being able to welcome you back in 2021 when this health crisis has passed.

Best wishes and stay well,

PIC Committee

Please note, a separate email will be sent out to all individuals and/or associations who have paid their entry fees for the 2020 PIC to discuss options.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
