And just like that, Nova Scotia’s Gem & Mineral Show 2026 has come to a close!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us in Parrsboro this weekend. Seeing the arena packed with collectors, families, rockhounds, first-time visitors and gem and mineral enthusiasts made this year’s show one to remember. ❤️

To our incredible vendors and exhibitors, volunteers, organizers, and everyone who helped make the weekend possible, thank you! And of course, thank you to every single person who walked through the doors, stopped to learn something new, supported our vendors, and shared their love of gems, minerals and fossils with us.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 2026
FIVE ISLANDS WALK
Dr. Howard Donohoe Leader
Start Location: Five Islands Provincial Park at the day-use parking lot.
Date and Time: Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 12:45. Departure at 1pm.
The length of the walk is about 2 hours along a sandy beach. Walking is easy to moderate. Families and individuals are welcome. Meet at day-use beach and parking lot at ??? Wear Saturday shoes and hats. Bring sunscreen and water.
Dinosaurs, Glaciers and Climate Change - - A Walk on the Wild Side at Five Islands
The dramatic orange and black cliffs of Five Islands Provincial Park preserve rocks from the age of dinosaurs. These rocks show major changes in climate during the dinosaurs’ time (225 to 190 million years) with rivers, playa lakes and deserts. The black basalt represents the rifting apart of the supercontinent Pangea. Huge amounts of lava flooded the rift valley as rifting progressed creating a varied topography and large lakes.
As you walk the beach you will see glacial till and gravels from the end of the last glaciation. Most of the glacial ice had melted at 10,500 years before present, when an ancient people built a fire and had a campsite at Debert.
During the walk, Howard and others will help you appreciate how geoscientists interpret the rocks, show you the amazing geological history of the park, and help you understand the big events of climate change, continental rifting and massive outpourings of basalt.
