Welcome to day 1 of 🎶 Shakes are set to close out the TD Stage at 8:55 PM.

The Athens, AL-raised band, comprised of vocalist/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, and bassist Zac Cockrell exploded onto the scene in 2012 with their debut album Boys & Girls, (ATO Records), which entered Billboard’s Independent Albums chart at No. 1. Boys & Girls earned the band multiple GRAMMY nominations and was hailed as one of the year’s best albums by numerous publications, including Rolling Stone, which also named lead single “Hold On” the #1 Best Song of 2012. Soon after its release, the bandmates found themselves thrust into the global spotlight, achieving such milestones as performing at the White House and on “Saturday Night Live.” The band’s legacy continued to grow with the groundbreaking Sound & Color (ATO Records). Released 10 years ago, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, won GRAMMY Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The first single, “Don’t Wanna Fight,” took honors in the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song categories. Sound & Color marked a profound evolution from Alabama Shakes’ debut album, as The New York Times Magazine observed, heralding the band’s “soul-stirring, shape-shifting new sound.” Both Sound & Color and Boys & Girls were certified Platinum by the RIAA. The Shakes’ Cockrell, Fogg, & Howard have reunited in the studio and released a new single “Another Life” last year.

Your CityFolk Featured Artist of the Day is... S*x Pistols Featuring Frank Carter (Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Glen Matlock)! 🎤🎶

S*x Pistols (Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Glen Matlock) ft. Frank Carter are set to play on the TD Stage at 7:20 PM on Sunday, September 20.

On the day of his first show fronting the S*x Pistols in summer 2024, Frank Carter was walking near Shepherd's Bush when a stranger outside a pub shouted at him: "Big shoes." Hours later, at Bush Hall, Carter filled them. Across three explosive benefit gigs for the venue, the Pistols roared back to life--reborn with ferocity, humour and joy. Now billed as S*x Pistols Featuring Frank Carter, the band--Carter, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook, and bassist Glen Matlock - have gone global this year. From Australia to Japan, through European festivals and a legendary Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall (where Carter conjured a giant circle pit in that hallowed venue), the new Pistols are once again a force of chaos and celebration. A return to London's 100 Club sealed the revival: before an audience that included Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller and Bobby Gillespie, they tore the place apart. A historic tour to the USA was on hold after an injury to Steve Jones, but they will return soon to conquer the continent. For Jones, the mission is simple: "If it ain't fun, I ain't doing it. I'm too old for bu****it." The fun is undeniable. Matlock's son Louis, himself a musician, first suggested his friend Carter as a natural fit. A coffee meeting became rehearsals, then Bush Hall. From the moment Cook kicked into the drum intro of Holidays in the Sun, it was clear: "This is how it was and how it should be," he says. Carter's Pistols apprenticeship began as a teenager in Watford, sneaking listens to his dad's vinyl copy of Never Mind the Bo****ks. The album's serrated energy set him on his path as a performer. By the time he emerged with Gallows in the 2000s, Carter already embodied punk's dangerous spirit--famously chasing a pint-throwing fan out of the 100 Club mid-set, or releasing the uncompromising Grey Britain after Gallows signed a million-pound record deal. Punk fury, sharpened by wit, was in his blood. That same energy now drives his partnership with Jones, Cook and Matlock. For the Pistols, the change feels less like reinvention than renewal. "The three of us learned to play together," Matlock says. "We grew as musicians side by side. And now we're enjoying it in a way we maybe never did before." Nearly 50 years after the band detonated British music, their message still lands. When Carter screams those words, they're not museum pieces--they're a living, furious address to now. As for what comes next, the band will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the great 1976 punk explosion with shows at home and abroad. Frank Carter and S*x Pistols continue storming stages across the globe, vital and unrepentant. For however long it lasts, it's worth witnessing. Because we won't see their likes again.

Your CityFolk Featured Artist of the Day is... Angus and Julia Stone! 🎤🎶

Angus & Julia Stone will perform on the TD Stage at 7:25 PM on Saturday, September 19.

Angus & Julia Stone's music seems to float on its own dreamy wavelength. Maybe that effect comes from the enigmatic bond of a shared history between brother and sister -- or maybe it's something deeper, something in their DNA that comes through so often in the music of family bands. The duo released their first EP, Chocolates and Ci******es, before moving to London in 2006, where they recorded Heart Full of Wine and their debut album, A Book Like This. Released in 2007, A Book Like This charted Top 10 in Australia. Two years later they returned with Down the Way -- a breakthrough record that earned them their first number one album, five ARIA Awards, and Australia's Hottest 100 with "Big Jet Plane," while introducing their music to a global audience. In 2014, they released the Rick Rubin-produced Angus & Julia Stone, followed by the critically acclaimed Snow (2017), the first album they wrote and recorded entirely themselves. Their most recent album, Cape Forestier (2024), was recorded at Sugarcane Mountain Studios and released ahead of one of their biggest global tours to date.

In the vast realm of modern folk and alternative rock, Amigo The Devil is an artist who channels a voice of unsettling beauty and raw truth.

Your CityFolk Featured Artist of the Day is... Amigo The Devil! 🎶🎤

Amigo the Devil will perform on the Westside Stage at 7:45 PM on Sunday, September 20.

Splicing alarming honesty with personal realizations, his narratives carry weight, wisdom and wit. With a brilliant mind, full soul and a penchant for the obscure, Amigo the Devil’s songwriting harkens back to a more brutal state of songwriting, influenced by the honesty of Leonard Cohen, the creativity of Tom Waits and the ruthlessness of Chavela Vargas. Rather than imitate, he identifies with their authentic disregard of consequences when it comes to songwriting and releasing music. Amigo the Devil is not polished or clean – he’s all heart, with reckless abandon, choosing to embrace one’s flaws instead of trying to change them. The son of a Greek father and Spanish mother, Amigo the Devil – otherwise known as Danny Kiranos – is a first-generation American from South Florida. He came of age in downtown Miami during the mid-1980s and spent significant portions of his earlier career embracing an almost nomadic lifestyle, absorbing tales from the underworld and penning songs about other wandering or lost souls. These stories found their way into his lyrics and gained a steady fellowship of fans along the way. His first full-length album, Volume 1, gave birth to ballads including “Hell and You,” “I Hope Your Husband Dies” and “One Kind of People,” followed by 2018’s Everything is Fine, which brought forth songs like “Hungover in Jonestown” and “Cocaine and Abel.” This evolution came fully into focus with Born Against (2021), released under his independent label Liars Club Records, which garnered critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Consequence, No Depression and American Songwriter, which described Amigo the Devil as “an artist who gives full reign to intrigue and intellect in equal measure.” The next chapter continued with the February 2024 release of Yours Until the War is Over, a songwriter’s record that proves this whole Amigo the Devil thing isn’t some true crime niche. Similar to Waits and Cohen, Amigo the Devil embodies the truest form of an artist, letting the music speak for itself while reminding listeners of the power of storytelling and music’s role in narrating human emotion.
