Tournament History

One of the cornerstones of firefighting and the culture within is the desire to give and be of service to others.

One of our active members, Tim Sutton, who has been employed with Oshawa Fire since 2007, was diagnosed with Classic Hodgkins Lymphoma in November of 2015. Tim Sought treatment at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and was informed in May 2016 that he was in remission. [Prior Service includes: Whitby Fire 2000-2002–volunteer, Peterborough Fire 2002-2007–active member]

Due to the high level of care and the utmost professionalism demonstrated by Tim’s team of doctors and nurses, he decided to create his very own charity ride for cancer. Tim wanted to give back to the institution that had literally given him his quality of life back.

Just four weeks after being informed of his remission, Tim completed his first annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

In 2016, the Oshawa Firefighter’s Association began hosting an annual Emergency Services Slo Pitch Tournament to help Tim raise funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The final amount raised in 2016 was $2200.00 In 2017, the tournament had grown in size to include nearly all fire departments across the GTA; as well as a Police and a college team. The final amount raised was over double that of the previous year at $4600.

In 2018, the goal is to grow the tournament to 32 teams and raise at least double the donations from 2017. We welcome you to join us for a fun day of slo pitch baseball in support of raising funds for the Princess Margaret cancer center, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world; delivering compassionate care and remaining a leader in breakthrough research and exemplary teaching.

2019 started off with a major partnership grant from The City of Oshawa, covering the value of the field rentals. This allowed for the tournament to expand its fundraising and donate money to institutions within the City of Oshawa. Upon tournament completion the following was donated: $5100 - Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre $ 2500 - Lakeridge Health $2609 - Princess Margaret Cancer Centre - VIA Tim Sutton’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. $ 300 - Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial 2019 seen teams travel from greater distances (Montreal-Hamilton) and hosted a successful Home Run Derby.
