The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival began in 2003 as a grassroots, community-supported event focused on raising funds for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Nanaimo. Now produced by the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club, the event remains an important fundraiser for cancer prevention and treatment on Vancouver Island. Since 2003, more than $400,000 has been raised to support the Nanaimo Hospit

al Foundation and more recently the BC Cancer Foundation. The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival was suspended in 2020 and 2021 along with most Canadian sporting events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival resumed operations in 2022 under the direction of the race management team of Vancouver Island-based Fairway Gorge Paddling Club, an organization that hosts the Vancouver Island Race Series. With support from the City of Nanaimo and many partnering organizations and enterprises, the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival will once again attract more than one thousand paddlers and many more spectators and visitors in July 2022. The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival is confident that it will once again emerge as one of Nanaimoโ€™s most important community events, and a central event in the Vancouver Island Dragon Boat Race Series.
