Clever Hopes is the musical project of Andrew Shaver, joined by a rotating cast of extraordinarily talented (and very cool) friends. The moniker takes its inspiration from a poem by W.H. Auden.

Across three albums, Shaver has built a national presence, with ten songs added to SiriusXM rotation, including a French-language single that has remained in rotation since 2022. Holding On, the lead single from his forthcoming album Even Gooder Than Tomorrow, reached #1 on the CBC Music Top 20 this past December. Somali, Muslim, gay, and three times an immigrant, Mohamed Abdulkarim Ali has always existed in a fraught state of transience. He has been forced across several borders, both geographical and personal, from being kidnapped by his father at the age of five to narrowly escaping an arranged marriage at nineteen. He subsequently became a substance abuser with no permanent address, and finally a university graduate and writer.

In Edgelands, Ali excavates these acute points of transience in his life to seek places, both internal and external, where he could belong. The library became a space through which his family’s history unfurled itself to him, forcing reckonings with his racialized body and the role it is coerced to play in North American society. Walks through the city’s fringe neighbourhoods prompted radical reimaginings of what the plaques and monuments dotting these streets truly memorialize. And Ali’s drug dependency, in all its glittering, insidious entrapments, served also to open doors into a world of freedom, beauty, and terror, of true q***r expression as well as its unseen costs.

An essential work for Alchemy by Knopf, this book collects a living, breathing lexicon: words, terms, concepts, and ideas that take the multiplicity of Black life as the point of departure.

Thinking from Black: A Lexicon is an unusual reference book. Its contributors—the Practicing Refusal Collective—are visual artists, poets, dancers, historians, writers, architects, painters, theorists, activists, anthropologists, filmmakers, educators, and musicians. Each has engaged with the idea of a lexicon of Black living and taken up the invitation to think from Black in relation to their own medium.

Some terms are enunciated in a poetic register—such as Redaction, Seeing, and Song. Some are aspirational—such as Solidarity, Garden, and Care. Some entries, such as BlackSound, Fantasy, Mathematics, and Dispossession, work in a more theoretical idiom. Words such as Gesture and Syncopation are composed of both text and drawings, and summon the body in motion. The word Time, which is defined twice, carries with it musicality, duration and refusal. Together, these definitions offer a sense of some of the many ways that Black people tend to each other and the world.

Read in relation to each other, the terms create a rich, startling lexicon that is eclectic, elliptical, cross-genre, historical, speculative, and literary—a set of words, phrases, concepts, and ideas that are part of the many languages constituting and animating Black life. Thinking from Black is a book to be read with others, as it was created. It is a book to live and think and act with, in the world.

"My dead friends are back. I lie in bed at night and see them."

Haunted by insomnia and the past as he approaches his fiftieth birthday, the narrator of My Dead Book flips through scenes of his youth and memories of dozens of friends who are no longer with him. Living alone and working odd jobs in Wisconsin, he ruminates on survival, q***r aging, his years as a teenage throwaway, and estrangement, wondering whether he has outlived his place in the world.

First published in 2021, Lippens’s debut novel was hailed as “a brutally acerbic novel of q***r pessimism” (Donna Marcus, AnOther Magazine).
