The Murray Harbour 2023 Canada Games Torch Relay is now a part of history and so are you! There is no doubt it was truly a magical evening filled with great people, great memories, great food, pride and moments which will never be recreated again. One of the torchbearers recently recalled to us the tremendous pride they felt as they looked over the smiling crowd - a moment in time forever embedded in their minds. By coming together and being a part of something bigger than ourselves, we truly showcased just who we are and what we can accomplish.

The steering committee would like to take a few moments to thank all of you for donating your time and believing in this amazing place we call home. To the torchbearers (David White, Megan MacLeod, Carol White, Royelle MacKay, Micah Pollard, Darlene Compton, Charlene Belsher, Faye Fraser, Thomas Doucette, Abbey Gordon, Kellie Clements, Alyssa Chapman, and Roland Penny as well as 1967 Canada Games Alumnus Maureen MacLeod who placed the torch in the holder), you are the best and brightest of our community. Be you young, or old, or somewhere in between, you have inspired us and continue to inspire us to be the best that we can be.

To those who volunteered their time and resources, you were and are amazing! Each of you were asked to take on tasks and not only carried them out with minimal direction but people continually told us about your warmth and hospitality as you took on your role. To name each of you individually would run the risk of missing someone but each of you know who you are and we are forever grateful to you. Special thanks to the Murray Harbour Fire Department and Constable Kim Dudley of the RCMP who took time to accompany the torchbearers throughout the Torch route. We are so very fortunate for people like you who support us through the good, the not so good and all things in between.

We would be amiss not thank PEI Mutual Insurance for providing each community who hosted the Torch Relay with funds to “celebrate”! As a result we, here in Murray Harbour, were not only able to celebrate the 2023 Canada Games but we were able to celebrate this amazing place we call “home”! The funding allowed us to enjoy the extras …food, face painting, entertainment, carriage rides, and more!

Finally, to our MC extraordinaire for the evening, Susan Herring! You are truly one of our treasures and you made, and continue to make us, proud in both official languages, we might add! To John Lavin who shared his wife, Lynn Stewart’s contribution to the birth of Paralympic sports in P.E.I. and unveiled a plaque at the Community Centre in recognition of Lynn’s life and commitment to making our world a better place ……..words cannot express our gratitude to you and Claire!

So until the next time we knock someone’s socks off and throw a big party ……..be the best that you can be!

PS- Photos are from various places on Facebook, etc but if you have more PM us.

Greetings All:
A very short note (I know you probably don’t think the word “short” is a part of my vocabulary when it comes to writing or talking - no comments needed especially the Steering Committee) to let you know we are compiling our “windup” of the Murray Harbour 2023 Canada Games Torch Relay early next week and will be posting any pictures we have as well as winning tickets and prizes. Stay tuned!

Volunteers Contacted …….✔️
Hopefully Jay has laryngitis so we can be sure to have good weather ✔️
Mayor has a new hat …..✔️
Torchbearers are in tip top shape ……✔️
Everyone who is anybody will be in Murray Harbour……✔️
Told everyone the event is happening on January 24th beginning at 6:30PM from Railhead Park and will snake through the Village (see the map) ending the Community Centre at app 7:45PM.

Oh wait -here’s some additional info you need to know about the Torch Relay.
- Beginning at approximately 6:25PM until approximately 7:30PM, all entrances to Murray Harbour will be limited access (barricades in place)
- If you want to cheer for a specific Torchbearer, you will be able to locate where their handoff will take place (or in David’s case at Railhead Park). At the handoff locations, an official photographer will be in place.
- Wowkwis is riding with the Murray Harbour Fire Department on one of their trucks so if you see a red fox in the village, it’s just her. She is pretty excited!
- Feel free to follow along with each torchbearer but you must always be behind the torch bearer and only the torchbearer or an authorized person can touch the torch.
- You can go inside the Community Centre after 6:30PM as free face painting will provided by our own, Noah Jory.
- We feel the Celebration will begin at approximately 7:45PM but it could be earlier or later depending on how long the relay takes.
- A short program which is being Emceed by our own Susan Herring will take place. A very special unveiling will take place during this part of the evening, one we are THRILLED to be a part of.
- At approximately 8PM, the music will begin and the free fries (compliments of Cavendish Farms), the free chilli, the free seafood chowder, the free popcorn, the free hot chocolate, free rolls (compliments of the Monks) and free pop will be available. Free face painting will be still in place until 8:30PM.
- Music will be provided by THE IRISH SCOTS !! Who are the Irish Scots? Norman Stewart, Maxine Maclennan and Courtney Hogan-Chandler.

And if time allows, you can take a ride through the village in a 20 passenger horse and carriage free of charge!

Soooo see you tomorrow….it’s Murray Harbour’s turn to “pump up the volume” and make our mark!

I know some of you are asking about the Celebration details and they will be posted in a few minutes. We would prefer not to put to much in one post as it becomes too long and cumbersome! Believe you, it will be worth the wait!
