The Murray Harbour 2023 Canada Games Torch Relay is now a part of history and so are you! There is no doubt it was truly a magical evening filled with great people, great memories, great food, pride and moments which will never be recreated again. One of the torchbearers recently recalled to us the tremendous pride they felt as they looked over the smiling crowd - a moment in time forever embedded in their minds. By coming together and being a part of something bigger than ourselves, we truly showcased just who we are and what we can accomplish.
The steering committee would like to take a few moments to thank all of you for donating your time and believing in this amazing place we call home. To the torchbearers (David White, Megan MacLeod, Carol White, Royelle MacKay, Micah Pollard, Darlene Compton, Charlene Belsher, Faye Fraser, Thomas Doucette, Abbey Gordon, Kellie Clements, Alyssa Chapman, and Roland Penny as well as 1967 Canada Games Alumnus Maureen MacLeod who placed the torch in the holder), you are the best and brightest of our community. Be you young, or old, or somewhere in between, you have inspired us and continue to inspire us to be the best that we can be.
To those who volunteered their time and resources, you were and are amazing! Each of you were asked to take on tasks and not only carried them out with minimal direction but people continually told us about your warmth and hospitality as you took on your role. To name each of you individually would run the risk of missing someone but each of you know who you are and we are forever grateful to you. Special thanks to the Murray Harbour Fire Department and Constable Kim Dudley of the RCMP who took time to accompany the torchbearers throughout the Torch route. We are so very fortunate for people like you who support us through the good, the not so good and all things in between.
We would be amiss not thank PEI Mutual Insurance for providing each community who hosted the Torch Relay with funds to “celebrate”! As a result we, here in Murray Harbour, were not only able to celebrate the 2023 Canada Games but we were able to celebrate this amazing place we call “home”! The funding allowed us to enjoy the extras …food, face painting, entertainment, carriage rides, and more!
Finally, to our MC extraordinaire for the evening, Susan Herring! You are truly one of our treasures and you made, and continue to make us, proud in both official languages, we might add! To John Lavin who shared his wife, Lynn Stewart’s contribution to the birth of Paralympic sports in P.E.I. and unveiled a plaque at the Community Centre in recognition of Lynn’s life and commitment to making our world a better place ……..words cannot express our gratitude to you and Claire!
So until the next time we knock someone’s socks off and throw a big party ……..be the best that you can be!
