En 1976, un remarquable film dramatique historique, *Novecento* (1900), fit son apparition dans le cinéma occidental. Coproduction italo-franco-allemande, il fut écrit et réalisé par le célèbre cinéaste italien Bernardo Bertolucci et mettait en scène des acteurs internationaux de renom, italiens, français, britanniques et américains, parmi lesquels Robert De Niro (Alfred) et Gérard Depardieu (Olmo). Le film dépeignait avec réalisme, dans un style épique, les bouleversements sociaux et politiques de l'Italie durant la première moitié du XXe siècle. Il s'ouvre sur la Révolution russe et la montée du communisme, puis retrace une série d'événements majeurs qui marquèrent l'Italie au cours du demi-siècle suivant : la mécanisation agricole, les grèves paysannes et ouvrières, les débuts du communisme, la Première Guerre mondiale, la montée du fascisme, l'essor des mouvements paysans, la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la chute du fascisme et la dissolution des forces armées populaires.

En 2008, ce film a été inclus dans la liste des 100 films du patrimoine culturel italien.

In 1976, a standout historical drama hit the Western film scene: 1900 (original title: Novecento). It was a co-production between Italy, France, and West Germany, directed by the brilliant Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci. The cast was an international powerhouse, starring big names like Robert De Niro (as Alfredo), Gérard Depardieu (as Olmo), and other stars from Italy, France, Britain, and the US.

The movie is an epic that realistically captures the social and political changes in Italy during the first half of the 20th century. It kicks off by bringing the Russian Revolution and the rise of communism onto the screen, then rolls through half a century of major Italian events: the mechanization of agriculture, strikes by farmers and workers, the early days of communism, World War I, the rise of fascism, surging peasant movements, World War II, the fall of fascism, and the disbanding of partisan forces.
In 2008, it was included in the list of 100 Italian films recognized as cultural heritage.

Umberto D. - Critique | Commentary - Hu Bin

Umberto D. (1952), réalisé par Vittorio De Sica, est une œuvre majeure du néoréalisme italien. Le film suit Umberto Domenico Ferrari, un fonctionnaire retraité vivant dans la Rome d’après-guerre, confronté à une pension insuffisante, à la menace d’expulsion et à une solitude croissante. Son unique compagnon est son petit chien, Flike, symbole discret de son isolement.

Fidèle aux principes du néoréalisme, De Sica adopte une mise en scène épurée et fait appel à des acteurs non professionnels. Carlo Battisti, professeur d’université sans expérience cinématographique, incarne Umberto avec une dignité et une retenue profondément émouvantes.

D’abord critiqué en Italie pour son regard social jugé trop sévère, Umberto D. est aujourd’hui reconnu comme l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de De Sica, offrant une réflexion intemporelle sur la vieillesse, la dignité humaine et la compassion.

Umberto D. (1952), directed by Vittorio De Sica, is a defining work of Italian Neorealism. The film follows Umberto Domenico Ferrari, a retired civil servant in postwar Rome, struggling with a meager pension, the threat of eviction, and deepening isolation. His only loyal companion is his small dog, Flike.

De Sica employs nonprofessional actors and a restrained, observational style to portray everyday hardship with quiet humanity. Carlo Battisti, a university professor with no acting background, delivers a performance marked by dignity and emotional restraint.

Though initially criticized in Italy for its bleak social vision, Umberto D. is now regarded as one of De Sica’s greatest achievements—a timeless meditation on aging, human dignity, and compassion.

Goodbye, Children - Critique | Commentary - Hu Bin

Au revoir les enfants, réalisé par Louis Malle et interprété par Gaspard Manesse et Raphaël Fejtö, est sorti en France le 7 octobre 1987. Sur fond de France occupée par l’Allemagne, le film retrace l’amitié entre Julien, un écolier français, et Jean Bonnet, un enfant juif caché dans un internat catholique. Leur lien, forgé dans le secret et la peur, réveilla de profondes émotions nationales et trouva un écho puissant auprès du public européen.

En 1987, Malle revint en France pour réaliser ce film autobiographique — une œuvre qui l’habitait depuis quarante ans. Les événements de ce matin d’hiver de 1944 étaient gravés dans sa mémoire, impossibles à oublier ; les yeux embués de larmes et de détresse des enfants avaient accompagné toute son existence. Comme l’écrivit Malle, « Je poursuis encore une vérité à la fois brûlante et éternelle. »

À travers le personnage de Joseph, on perçoit un écho de Lucien dans une œuvre antérieure de Malle, rappel des ambiguïtés morales qui hantèrent la France en temps de guerre. Au revoir les enfants remporta le Lion d’or à la Mostra de Venise en 1987.

Goodbye, Children, directed by Louis Malle and starring Gaspard Manesse and Raphaël Fejtö, premiered in France on October 7, 1987. Set against the backdrop of German-occupied France, the film recounts the friendship between Julien, a French schoolboy, and Jean Bonnet, a Jewish child sheltered in a Catholic boarding school. In 1987, Malle returned to France to make this autobiographical film—one that had lingered in his mind for forty years. Through the character of Joseph, we catch an echo of Lucien from Malle’s earlier work, a reminder of the moral ambiguity that haunted wartime France. Goodbye, Children went on to win the Golden Lion at the 1987 Venice Film Festival.

The Ballad of Narayama - Critique | Commentary - Hu Bin

Il y a plus d’un siècle, dans la région du Shinano au Japon, la productivité était extrêmement faible et la vie d’une dureté impitoyable. La terre conservait encore un ordre écologique d’une brutalité primitive : les nouveau-nés étaient abandonnés, et toute personne de plus de soixante-dix ans était portée par sa famille jusqu’à une crête montagneuse pour y être laissée mourir.

Le film d’Imamura Shōhei, adapté du roman La Ballade de Narayama de Shichirō Fukazawa, dirige sa caméra sans détour vers ces populations pauvres et plongées dans l’obscurité, tout en les juxtaposant aux multiples formes de vie luttant pour survivre et se reproduire sur cette terre aride. Le résultat évoque un documentaire sur la compétition entre espèces.

Au cœur de ce processus d’évolution désolé, sauvage et cruel—raconté avec le plus grand calme cinématographique—nous observons la détermination inébranlable d’Orin à accepter sa mort et sa compassion instinctive et farouche pour la génération suivante. Dans sa décision de se briser les dents, dans ses réprimandes envers son fils hésitant, dans ses efforts pour assurer une descendance à sa famille, et dans ses adieux ultimes à son enfant, le film fait surgir une force puissante d’amour universel et une dignité humaine éclatante, qui se propagent comme une onde et bouleversent corps et âme.

Le film met en vedette Ken Ogata (dans le rôle de Tatsuhei) et Sumiko Sakamoto (dans le rôle d’Orin), et a remporté la Palme d’Or au Festival de Cannes en 1984.

More than a century ago, in the Shinano region of Japan, productivity was extremely underdeveloped and life was harsh. The land still preserved a brutally primitive ecological order: newborn infants were abandoned, and anyone over seventy was carried by family members to a mountain ridge and left there to die.

Imamura Shōhei’s film, adapted from Shichirō Fukazawa’s novel The Ballad of Narayama, trains its camera unflinchingly on these impoverished and benighted people, while also juxtaposing them with the many forms of life struggling to survive and reproduce on this barren land. The result resembles a documentary on the competition among species.

Amid this desolate, savage, and cruel process of evolution—depicted with the calmest cinematic narration—we witness Orin’s unwavering resolve to meet her death and her fierce, instinctive compassion for the next generation. In her voluntary breaking of her own teeth, in her scolding of her hesitant son, in her efforts to secure a mate for her descendants, and in her final farewell to her child, the film reveals a powerful force of universal love and a radiant human dignity that ripple outward, shaking both body and soul.

The film stars Ken Ogata (as Tatsuhei) and Sumiko Sakamoto (as Orin), and won the Palme d’Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival.

Shakespeare in Love illustre la manière dont le jeune poète et dramaturge ambitieux William Shakespeare aurait créé sa célèbre tragédie Roméo et Juliette au cœur d’une histoire d’amour passionnée. Il convient de rappeler que Shakespeare épousa Anne Hathaway à l’âge de 18 ans, alors qu’elle en avait 26, et qu’ils eurent trois enfants. Ce n’est qu’après la trentaine qu’il fut véritablement reconnu comme acteur et dramaturge. Concernant la question de l’attribution de ses œuvres, certains soutiennent qu’Edward de Vere, 17e comte d’Oxford, pourrait être le véritable auteur derrière les écrits de Shakespeare. D’autres affirment que Christopher Marlowe ne serait pas réellement mort lors d’une rixe dans une taverne, mais aurait plutôt pris l’identité de William Shakespeare.
