Hailing from Ottawa, Suren Barry (Canada) is equally at home on harpsichord, fortepiano, and modern piano. Throughout his post post-secondary education, he took every opportunity to explore early repertoire, historical improvisation, and sought out instruction on harpsichord and fortepiano before finally delving into early music during the pandemic at The Juilliard School, where he studied with Peter Sykes, Béatrice Martin, and Richard Egarr.
Over the past several years, he has performed with some of the world's leading conductors and early music ensembles in France, Germany, and the U.S., such as Les Arts Florissants (led by William Christie) and Yale's Schola Cantorum (led by David Hill). Prior to undertaking studies in early music, Barry completed a doctorate in piano performance with a thesis on improvising cadenzas in Mozart concertos.
