As our sector continues to lie in pieces, we are disappointed to see the new provincial budget has paid little attention to one of its main economic drivers - the cultural industries. With just over 7M$ for COVID relief designated across all these sectors - tourism, culture, heritage, archeology, sports, parks and attractions - we see this as using a band-aid on a major haemorrhage. The cultural sector, which brings in $572M a year for the province, has suffered a 17% employment loss between December 2019 and December 2020.

Our sector was first to close and will be among the last to re-open. Hundreds of events across the province have been cancelled indefinitely; beloved venues have closed their doors for good, and more are in danger of doing the same.

Festivals and live events bring social and economic vitality to the region. They employ local artists, technicians, security personnel, stage managers and many others. Without significant government investment, our province runs the risk of losing these vital components of our cultural industries.

How many more music businesses, venues and festivals need to close? How many artists need to lose their careers before our provincial government will recognize the impact of arts and culture on the economic and social wellbeing of New Brunswickers?

Notre secteur continue de s'effriter et nous sommes déçus de voir que le nouveau budget a accordé peu d'attention à l'un des principaux moteurs économiques de notre province - les industries culturelles. Avec seulement environ 7M$ pour contrer les effets de COVID sur les secteurs de tourisme, culture, patrimoine, archéologie, sports, parcs et attractions, nous voyons ça comme un pansement sur une hémorragie majeure. Le secteur culturel, qui rapporte 572M$ par an à la province, a subi une perte d'emplois de 17% entre décembre 2019 et décembre 2020.

Notre secteur a été le premier à fermer et sera parmi les derniers à rouvrir. Des centaines d'événements à travers la province ont été annulés pour une durée indéterminée. Des salles de spectacle bien aimées ont fermé leurs portes pour de bon, et d'autres risquent de faire de même.

Les festivals et les événements apportent une vitalité sociale et économique à notre région. Ces activités emploient des artistes locaux, des techniciens, du personnel de sécurité, des régisseurs et bien d'autres. Sans un investissement important du gouvernement, notre province risque de perdre ces composantes essentielles de nos industries culturelles.

Combien d'entreprises, de salles et de festivals devront encore fermer? Combien d'artistes devront perdre leur carrière avant que notre gouvernement provincial ne reconnaisse l'impact des arts et de la culture sur le bien-être économique et social des Néo-Brunswickois·es?
