Salt shortages again this year?

Ryan Quigley (owner of The Gardener and Storm Solutions Plus) says we might be looking at a repeat of last year's price and availability issues.

The good news: more contractors are asking the right questions before jumping in. Doing the research. Listening to people who've already been through it.

Demand for liquid is climbing. Ryan's advice: don't wait until you're forced into it.

Ryan Quigley didn't flip a switch and go all-liquid overnight. Every year at The Gardener, they add a little more to their liquid arsenal, and it comes down to return on investment and where it makes sense financially.

If you already have salt spreaders and that infrastructure in place, his advice is simple: add one or two units, maybe start with sidewalks, then grow into parking lots the following year. He said he'd personally never push anyone to make a full switch in year one. There's real value in building the knowledge as you go, since liquid takes some different information than granular.

The result for his own business: about 70 to 75 percent liquid last year, and still growing.

When I started, there was no one to call — no community, no education, nobody vetting equipment. We were using farm equipment back then, figuring it out storm by storm on our own.

The guys with one truck and no yard to store product had nowhere to turn. That's the exact gap our filling stations were built to close. No one handed me a playbook, so I built one myself.

Four years sounds long until you're actually living it — building a network in an industry you're pioneering. Bringing on an environmental consultant was a big piece of getting it right. The real fight wasn't the idea, it was bandwidth: sales, production, accounting, training, all at once.

That's the Liquid Network — multiple experts from different fields, working on one massive project.

How you handle a storm, and how you're set up to handle it, is going to look different than the next guy. I tell contractors this all the time: as much as I'd love to hand you a cookie-cutter plan, it takes planning, educating your team, and strategically moving your personnel and equipment to get the job done right.

Ultimately, we all want to get to black asphalt. How we get there, liquids, salt, a combination of both, or one or the other, there's no right or wrong. It's what's going to work for you.

It gets specific to each company. You can start off with one common goal, but the way you execute it will look different from company to company. I've seen that firsthand, and I've seen it even city to city when I deal with municipalities.

Liquid Network update: two filling stations signed up and running by this winter, and the portal went live this month — education, consulting calls, vetted equipment suppliers, all in one place. This fall we're targeting more locations around the GTA.

A year ago, none of this existed. Now there's a place to get liquid, get equipment, and get educated, all in one spot.

Ryan Quigley made an interesting point about who's actually driving the shift to liquid. He's noticed a generational split: contractors who've been in the business a long time are often feeling pressure on the financial side, potential shortages, or how contracts are worded. The younger blood coming up is looking at it differently, thinking about return on investment, the environment, and corrosion, both on their own equipment and on their clients' properties.

That corrosion conversation matters more than people think. There's real cost tied to how much damage salt does per ton, whether it's turf, gardens, flower beds, door sills, or brickwork.

One advantage liquid has either way: you can put it exactly where you want it. No bounce, no scatter, a lot more control than granular.

Where does the Liquid Network go long term? I want it to be the standard for liquid de-icing in Canada — vetted equipment, real education, nobody figuring it out alone. We already have distributorship relationships in Montreal, BC, and Manitoba, and long term we expect to grow across the country.

Dan's watched Eco Solutions grow for years, new tanks, new processes every time he visits. But it wasn't until they started working together that he really saw the systems behind it.

Their work together has evolved from design and web development into automating a lot of Eco Solutions' admin, all while keeping the customer focus and education that Antonio's always led with. As Dan puts it, Antonio isn't just trying to make a sale, he's trying to get people to actually believe in liquids.

Dan used to work at Environment Canada. Science forward, by the book, lots of testing and analysis. But he could identify a damaging contaminant and still not be able to do anything about it.

When the road salt problem came up through a friend in the industry, he jumped into snow and ice to see what was actually happening on the ground. Couldn't have been more different, and he loved it.
