The Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge Cup is a premier sporting event created and designed specifically for units of the Canadian Army Reserve. There is no other sporting event of its kind in Canada that is available for Canadian Army Reserve units. Physically demanding team sports have long been appreciated by militaries around the world as a means to develop their fighting force. They are key to b

uilding strong, dedicated unit bonds and esprit de corps that is critical to military success. Tug-o-War is ideally suited for Army Reserve units as it requires few resources, no prior experience, and requires no more than a section of soldiers (the basic building block of capability within the Army) for a team, where success is more a function of unit cohesion and leadership than raw physical strength and body mass. It’s a technical sport that demands the full cooperation and rhythm of a team of soldiers working together in exact harmony...perfect for small unit leadership development. Combined with the public competition venue presented by the Glengarry Highland Games, The Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge Cup has a significant contribution on unit morale, leadership development, self-discipline, teamwork, loyalty, and commitment while establishing and building strong community ties. Intrinsically, the importance to recruiting and retention within the Primary Reserve (PRes) cannot be overstated.

This year will mark the 12th edition of the event and we again hope to see teams from coast to coast compete in front of an audience of more than 10,000 for the coveted prize...The Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge Cup!

Note that we've opened the competition up to any Army Reserve unit from across Canada. Since the event is part of The Glengarry Highland Games, Scottish Highland Sports dress is recommended and preferred for all competitors. However, it is appreciated that many reserve units may not have suitable Scottish Highland attire available and as such, suitable Canadian Army combat sports attire would be accepted. See attached draft of V2 of the Rules & Regulations.

Last year we had 10 teams attend.

1. The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa
2. The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment of Canada)
3. The Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders
4. The Lake Superior Scottish
5. The Essex & Kent Scottish
6. The Toronto Scottish Regiment,
7. The Lorne Scots,
8. The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada
9. The Brockville Rifles, and
10. The 42nd Field Regiment (Lanark & Renfrew Scottish), RCA.

At this point all you need to do is put the date on your calendars, 3-5 August 2018, Maxville, Ontario, put the event in your 2018/2019 Unit Business Plan and make sure your Brigade knows and understands the importance of the event, especially in how it contributes to personnel retention and recruiting within the PRes.

All you need is 8 pullers and a coach (plus 2 spare pullers if you can manage it)!

RIP.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Pony Lance Corporal Cruachan III, the last Regimental mascot of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and retired mascot of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

"Cruachan III, who was 30 years old, was suffering from arthritis all over his body and, despite extensive medical treatment, he was still in severe pain. Vets made the decision to put him to sleep, in the familiar surroundings of his stable at Edinburgh’s Redford Barracks, on Tuesday, 27th February.

Shetland Pony mascots have been an integral part of the Army in Scotland’s history for almost 90 years, since Princess Louise presented Cruachan I to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1929. They have represented their regiments in front of Her Majesty the Queen at State ceremonial events, on public duties and at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. They have all embodied the toughness, feistiness, humour and sometimes stubbornness of the Scottish soldier and have always been much loved members of their regiments, serving with them wherever in the world they went.

Cruachan III had a long and glittering military career, joining the 1st Battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in September 1995. He served everywhere the Argylls did around Scotland and England, including stints at Balmoral with the Royal Guard. He also served with them on several operational tours, in the Balkans, Iraq and Northern Ireland. During his service, he was awarded the NATO Former Yugoslavia Medal, the Iraq Medal, the General Service medal with the Northern Ireland Clasp, the Accumulated Service Medal and the Jubilee medal.

In 2006, on the formation of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, he became their first mascot and continued representing the Regiment at State and public duties and parades, as well as at fairs, charity events, Highland Games and horse shows all over the country, delighting thousands of members of the public with his endearing character. He was even asked to appear in the spectacular Diamond Jubilee Pageant, in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 years as monarch, in May 2012.

He retired from service on the last night of the 2012 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, where he led the guard of honour at the show’s finale, in front of 9,000 audience members and 1000 cast. This was the 10th run of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo he had taken part in over the years.

After his military career was over, Cruachan III became stablemate to Cruachan IV, who took over from him as the official mascot. He still travelled with Cruachan IV to events for as long as he was able.

He carried on winning awards, as well as hearts, after his retirement. He was named ‘Equine Personality of the Year’ in 2016 by the British Horse Society – an honour which saw him being presented with the prestigious Tarragon Trophy. He also received an award for his charity work in 2017, from veterans’ organisation Erskine. He was named as one of their 100 Heroes, to celebrate the centenary of the charity. He was one of only 100 who were awarded a Heroes medal and he was the only animal.

An act of remembrance will be held for Cruachan III at Stirling Castle, the historic home of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, in the future where his remains will be interred."
