This is what a day at the Fair actually looks like. πŸ’™

Thanks to Sofie Pinelis Ifantopoulos for these β€” the arch, the barns, the midway, and one very patient Clydesdale.

We could shoot for four days straight and not get that last photo.

The calm before the storm. 🌾

Right now the Homecraft Building looks like this. Empty tables, folded chairs, waiting.

In a few weeks it'll be a wall of quilts, a hundred jars of jam, prize-winning dahlias, and pies that took someone's whole Saturday. Thousands of entries, every one of them made by hand by someone in this community.

Take-in is Tuesday, September 29 β€” and entries close September 17 at 8pm.

If you've been meaning to enter something, this is your sign. Browse the Prize Book at markhamfair.ca and find your section.

New for 2026: the Legacy Recipe Award. πŸ₯§

Esther Lewis joined what was then the Domestic Science Committee in 1977, after the Fair moved near her family home. She's been there ever since: over 40 years. Domestic Science Chair in 1988. Homecraft President in 1991.

Baking was always the thing. She became known around the Fair for her friendly pie competitions and for one chocolate pie in particular.

This year, that pie became a competition class.

Class 81: Ester Lewis Chocolate Pie. The recipe is printed in the Prize Book: cocoa, sugar, cornstarch, milk, butter, vanilla, a baked shell, whipped cream on top once it's cooled. Anyone can enter. Everyone bakes the same pie. The judging is on how well you make hers.

Esther is the first person featured with a Legacy Recipe. The plan is to feature a new one every year.

Class 57: Crochet Dice Bag β€” for Tabletop Gaming. 🎲

New this year. Which means right now, nobody has ever won it.

Somewhere out there is a person who crochets and plays D&D, and they have never had a reason to bring those two things into the same room. This is that reason.

First one ever. Someone's name goes in the record book.

Section 1 of the Prize Book is Antiques. It gets specific. ⚱️

Not "bring an old thing." Thirty-three numbered classes, each one asking for exactly one object:

πŸ•―οΈ Hearse Finial
πŸ’‡ Curling Iron (For Hair)
πŸš— Car Radiator Ornament
πŸ”¨ Claw Hammer
πŸ₯› Milking Stool, 16" max
πŸŽ–οΈ WWI Identification Necklace
πŸͺ† Mattel Doll "Skipper" β€” Barbie's sister
πŸš€ Apollo 11 Memorabilia

Everything must be 80 years or older to qualify β€” except the collectibles classes, which want things from 1946 to 1976 specifically.

Which means somewhere in Markham there's a person who owns a hearse finial and knows exactly which week in September to bring it in.

Some Markham Fair categories aren't really about winning. πŸ’™

Scattered through the Needlecraft section of our Prize Book is a quiet run of classes where the entry never goes home with the exhibitor:

🧀 Mittens for the Mitten Tree: donated to charity
🧒 Chemo caps: cotton yarn only, no seams. Donated to Markham Stouffville Hospital
πŸ‘Ά Preemie hats: knit to fit a grapefruit. Also to the hospital
πŸ›οΈ A quilt, 26" x 34": donated to the hospital NICU
πŸ₯• Crocheted vegetables: three different types, and the entry must arrive with a can of vegetables for the local food bank

That last one is our favourite. You can't even enter without bringing food for someone else.

These get judged and ribboned like every other class. Then they get given away.

Class 36: "Almost Done!" 🧢

Somewhere in the Markham Fair Prize Book, between the gingerbread houses and the tree ornaments, there is a competition class for a project that is two-thirds finished.

Not finished. Two-thirds.

Every single person reading this has one. The quilt in the closet. The needlepoint you started in 2019. The sock with no partner. Markham Fair sees you, and Markham Fair says: enter it anyway.
