Ever wonder where the cars come from? 💙 The monster trucks need something to crush. Every year, Standard Auto Wreckers makes sure something’s there.

Here’s what most of the grandstand doesn’t realize: nothing in that ring is a working car. Every one of them arrives at the end of its life, already picked over for the parts that still had years left in them. A door for somebody’s repair, an alternator that’ll keep another car on the road a while longer. What gets set down in front of the Monster Trucks is what’s left after all of that. The show is the last job that vehicle ever does, and what survives it gets recycled into steel.

Which means the most spectacular show at Markham Fair is also one of the most sensible.

Happy Halloween from Markham Fair 🎃 Here’s something many people don’t know about a fall fair: the calves dress up too.

There’s a costume class in our show ring, and it is exactly as good as that sounds.

Not pictured: the judges keeping a straight face.

The rest is the usual October business around here. Pumpkins carved into things with teeth and tongues, the Faircrow cut into a prize pumpkin, and a midway that turns purple after dark.

Have a good one tonight, Markham. Watch for cows. 🐄👻

White pants is the fastest way to spot a 4-H youth at a fall fair. Whites on, calf washed and clipped, halter in hand, waiting on a judge.

What the photo doesn’t show is the months behind it. Choosing a calf. Teaching it to stop, to stand, and to walk where you want it to go. A calf that outweighs you several times over. Washing. Clipping. Leading it around the yard again, and again, until neither of you has to think about it any more.

Then a few minutes in a ring to find out how it went.

To every 4-H member who walked into our ring this year: that was a lot of work, and it showed. Great work!

Meet our 2026 Friends of the Fair. 💙

Markham Fair doesn’t run on gate admission alone. It runs on businesses that decide, year after year, that a 182-year-old agricultural society is the place to be to meet new and returning customers, Markham Fair’s visitors!

Today is World Food Day. This year’s theme is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.” 🌾 Which is, more or less, the job description of an agricultural fair.

Markham Fair has been running since 1844. In all that time the point of it has never really been the midway, it’s been farmers bringing their best work to one place so everyone else can see how it was done. A prize table is a knowledge-transfer system with ribbons on it.

Swipe through and you’re looking at a food system:

Vegetables carried in and tagged for judging. A table of squash and pumpkin varieties in the Agri-Food Tent, most of which you will never see in a grocery store. Growers named on the cards beside the giants they grew. A Holstein in clean straw. A shearer showing a crowd how it’s done, the way it’s been shown here for a century. A straw bale with a hand-lettered sign telling you it weighs 440 kg and costs $50 — because knowing what farming actually costs is part of understanding food.

Then the last two. A kid at the controls of a new tractor, and a 4-H member in the ring with her heifer. The innovating and the nourishing, on the same grounds, in the same weekend.

Sustainable food systems don’t get built at a fall fair. But they do get taught at one.

A fall fair is a harvest festival with a midway attached. And at the start of this month, you filled ours. 182 years of bringing in what the season gave us.

Thank you to the exhibitors, the volunteers and the farm families who make it happen. Whatever's on your table tonight, somebody grew it. 🧡

BISCUIT IS HOME! 🐰💙

We're overjoyed to share that Biscuit, the first-place Holland Lop taken from the Pet and Poultry Building at the 182nd Markham Fair, is safely back with his family.

"We are absolutely thrilled that Biscuit is home where he belongs," said Devin King, 2026 Markham Fair President.

Thank you to York Regional Police, the media, our volunteers and staff, and everyone who searched, shared and sent messages of support. And a special thank you to one generous stranger who contributed to the reward and came out to the fairgrounds to help search, simply because she cared.

We're reviewing our security to help keep every animal at the Fair safe in the years ahead.

UPDATE: Biscuit is home! 💙 🐇

Biscuit's family is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to his safe return.

Biscuit was taken from the Pet and Poultry Building at the 182nd Markham Fair on the evening of Saturday, October 3. If you have any information, please contact the family at 647-619-8429 or York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423. You can also reach Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

HEAR YE, HEAR YE 🔔 Markham Fair has been named Best Local Festival in the 2026 Readers' Choice awards! Our thanks to Reader's Choice for the honour.

And we're passing that one straight to you. You nominated us. You voted. And then you came out and filled these grounds for four days straight. That award has your name on it a good deal more than it has ours.

182 years. 50 of them right here on these grounds. And every one of them comes down to the same thing: the people who walk through that gate.

That's a wrap on 2026, and we're so grateful to everyone who came out. See you next year for the 183rd Markham Fair: September 30, October 1, 2, & 3. 🎡
