📣 UPDATE FROM LAKETOWN HQ

Bringing world-class entertainment to Vancouver Island is something we pride ourselves on at Laketown Amphitheatre. Throughout the year, we are in conversations with some of the world’s top performers about bringing them to our beautiful island. This process is not as straightforward as it may seem, as artists' tours are complex logistical undertakings with many factors at play.

July 30th - Aug 2nd our marquee event, Sunfest Country Music Festival (the largest country music festival in the province), is shaping up to be our biggest edition to date, with a standout lineup, an expanded site experience, and a full weekend of music, camping, and community that continues to raise the bar each year.

After many months of continued effort to secure the right headliner for another amazing Laketown Amphitheatre experience this year, we have decided to focus our efforts on making 2027 our biggest and best yet.

Laketown is also coming alive this summer with a variety of other events. Cowichan Bluegrass Festival, 5K Foam Fest, Jeepapalooza, Otherworld, and more are all set to draw thousands of fans between May and August. For more information on these events, please visit laketownranch.com.

Thank you to everyone who supports events on Vancouver Island. We can’t wait to see you back at Laketown soon.

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 14

Event graphics, billboards, websites, advertisements, social media posts, stage graphics, on-site wayfinding signage, maps, apps, contests, press releases... there are so many moving parts to the communication efforts for our events, and for Laketown Amphitheatre. The person tasked with it all is Matt Rose, the Communications Manager for Laketown.

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I’m the Communications Manager for Laketown Amphitheatre. I take care of the graphic design, websites, apps, social media, marketing, advertising, & media partnerships for our events & for the Ranch. During events, I’m charged with media coordination, our photographer & videographer teams, MC scheduling, in-app messaging to our guests, and generally just helping out in any way I can. I also got promoted to drone pilot last year, so that’s kinda fun.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I started as the graphic designer for Laketown before its opening in 2016. My role expanded to include our marketing & advertising efforts in 2022. I’ve been working in this industry for 15+ years.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
Hands down the very best and most enjoyable part of my job is working alongside a team of incredibly talented and amazing folks who care so much about making sure that you all have the very best live music experiences here on Vancouver Island. The cherry on top is always the moment our headliner takes the stage, and we get to look out on the sea of smiling faces, knowing that all of our hard work has been a success.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
There is just a small group of us working year-round, wearing many different hats. Where other large festivals and event venues might have several people in each core department, at Laketown there is typically just one. My position is no different. I think this 'inch wide and mile deep' ethos is part of what makes Laketown so special and enduring in a world where music festivals are increasingly going away.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Just how much thought and effort goes into how we communicate to you. We meet regularly to discuss how to best and most effectively keep you all informed & engaged, create exciting contests and giveaways with our sponsors & media partners, & generally try to answer all your questions even before they’re asked. It’s a monumental task that we put a lot of thought into year-round.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
One year, we had a large fellow sneak onto the property in the middle of the day during a blisteringly hot Sunfest. He ran into the woods, climbed 50' up a tree overlooking the festival bowl, and refused to come down. It took a team of 5 or so of us to coax him from his perch, before we ultimately chased him off property. He was a very large black bear.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Being an 80's & 90's kid, I’d love to see still-active acts such as Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Metallica, NIN, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers.
A proper electronic music and arts festival would also be terrific to see.

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 13

Picture this - you arrive to Laketown for a massive show, and find it barren; no tents are set up, no signs are hung, no fences, no chairs, no lights... It would be absolute chaos.
Cue our Operations team, the superhero group that swoops in to save the day sometimes months before showtime, setting up literally EVERYTHING you see on site. From banners, to way-finding signage, to tents, ped barriers, fencing, and SO much more, this motley crew of hilarious and hardworking beauties ensure that YOU know what the heck is going on during your visit to the Amphitheatre. The overachieving megamind charged with transforming the property from mild to wild is Sheri Rowe, our superstar Site Operations Manager!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I actually had to look this up. I mostly just show up and hope there’s a trailer for me ;) I’m the Site Operations Manager, which basically means I wrangle an outrageously talented crew who keep Laketown Ranch running: power, water, tents, signs, you name it. If it needs to be built, or if it can break, it’s probably part of our world, and someone on our team has touched it (probably thrice). I genuinely think I have the best job on site though. We get to be everywhere, see everything, and quietly keep it all together.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I’ve been a full-time freelance event professional (read: glutton for punishment) since 2009. My pal Hanner first invited me to the Ranch in 2016 during Sunfest, and I was instantly in love with this site. I started working here the next summer and have been watching it grow ever since. The transformation has been incredible. There’s truly nothing else like it in BC's festival world. Having an owner with longterm vision and the freedom to experiment - to try things, tweak them, and do it better next time - that is an anomaly in the festival world. You don’t often get to have both. The idea was never just to put a mobile stage on a soccer field (though I have worked tons of those and love them too). Out of the gates the goal was to build something lasting. To build a permanent home to attract the biggest bands to Vancouver Island. It’s really something, and I am genuinely very proud to play a part in it.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
The people, hands down. I get to work alongside the most skilled, hard-working, delightfully weird humans you could imagine. Everyone brings something different. Half the time it’s a skill you didn’t even know existed until it saves the day. It’s impossible to explain what we do, but I swear we get as much joy out of building the site as people do from attending the festival. The artists and the music are obviously a perk, but there is nothing more rewarding than standing back and watching people enjoy what we’ve build in real time.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
We’re not a pop-up crew that rolls in for a week… some of us are here year-round. We’re real people physically building the thing, and we pour everything we’ve got into it. The Ops team doesn’t just chuck up a fence line for money or to get to see some “free” music, we genuinely care about making it the best experience it can be.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Oh, remember earlier when I said I had the best job because we can be anywhere, anytime? Yeah… it rules. But it can also suck. Our job truly never ends. The blessing and the curse is that we’re so damn useful that we get called for absolutely everything, whether it’s technically our department or not. One minute we’re fixing lights or plumbing, the next we’re bartending or directing traffic (though that’s fun when they give you a bullhorn to do it!). We’re professional problem-solvers with a dash of chaos management. There’s no manual for that, it’s just quick thinking, teamwork, and a solid sense of humour.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
Ha! “That I can share” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. I’ve got hundreds. I’ve learned new skills (both practical and people-related) and met some of my favourite humans on this site. The memories happen everywhere... like when a shelf of pots and pans crashes down at 1 AM and instead of losing it, someone starts a “clean-up song” that lives on forever. Or when Greg Adams busts out his signature dance moves during soundcheck. Or when the headliner takes the stage and we get to watch from our little perch all tired, dirty, proud (and giggly) knowing we helped make it happen.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Anyone is cool with me, but Dolly Parton would be epic! :)

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 12

A LOT of collective calories are burned during our events. Whether you're attending as a fan, dancing and exploring the 250 acre property, or working long hours in one of many departments, it's vitally important that the tank gets continuously refilled with nutritious food. With thousands upon thousands of hungry mouths to feed, the tireless team at The Rack work around the clock to make sure that nary a single stomach growls all weekend long.
Leading this large and logistically delicious team is Cole Byers, our CNNO (Chief Nom-Nom Officer)!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
The Rack Hospitality team oversees multiple food operations onsite. We manage staffing and all food service areas including VIP, Artist, GA, Bowl, Volunteer, and Operations. Our team handles logistics and ex*****on to ensure festival guests & workers receive fast, high quality food service throughout the event.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I’ve been involved with Sunfest since 2012 and have worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years, combining large scale event operations with restaurant experience.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
The most enjoyable part is the reflection of success that comes from overcoming adversity and executing an event of this scale with a great team, from the promoters to the cooks, ticket staff, dishwashers and everyone in between.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
Most of the heavy lifting happens months before the gates open. Planning improvements, permits, staffing plans, supply logistics, power setups, cleaning schedules and contingency plans are all mapped out well in advance.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Balancing unpredictable elements like weather, sudden volume surges and estimating demand. Sometimes you only have hours to adapt, which can mean large scale ordering and quick staffing adjustments.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
My favourite moments always involve family. Seeing my kids experience the time, effort and sacrifice that goes into an event like this means a lot. It’s also been special watching my wife Jasmine Grant and her band “Old Island Highway” perform on the Main Stage alongside some of the A list artists that come through Sunfest.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Thursday Kickoff: Black Pistol Fire, The Glorious Sons
Friday: Linkin Park, Audioslave
Saturday: Metallica, Shinedown
Sunday: Foo Fighters, Green Day

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 11

Inviting 16,000 music lovers to the Ranch for a weekend of revelry can be a messy affair indeed. "Leave no trace" isn't just our ethos, it's our responsibility and obligation to the land, to our community, and to all the majestic and adorable forest animals who call Laketown their home. Probably the single dirtiest job at the Ranch, and certainly one of the most important, would be our Green Team. They're tasked with (among other things) making sure that the entire 250+ acres of the property is reset each day, and returned to its pristine natural state after our events. The tireless coordinator of this massive team is Brent Clancy, our Green Team Manager!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
My name is Brent Clancy, I am the owner of V.I. Labour Services Inc.
We are responsible for providing qualified staff to assist with different areas of the Festival. Operations include but are not limited to: Green Team, Janitorial Team, Stage Team and Bar Team.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I have been assisting Laketown Ranch since its inception in Youbou in 2016. We began with a crew of 10 people who assisted with rock picking the main field. This lasted several weeks, then there was set up for the first Sunfest with Carrie Underwood & Dierks Bentley. That was a learning experience to say the very least.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
I look forward to seeing all the beautiful faces each and every year. It's always a reunion that brings smiles, hugs and great energy. I love it and look forward to it so much.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
For us the preparation begins a month before the festivals; for many others it almost never stops. People don't often realize how many moving parts go into making a large festival or event come together and run smoothly. The fact that Laketown Ranch can accomplish this, and how the staff and facility improves and evolves every single year truly blows me away. In my experience, it's a rarity.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Other than all the gut wrenching, smelly surprises, it's the small unseen managerial aspects required for our team to organize and accomplish their goals efficiently.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
Every year and festival, a story is created. From the first Sunfest with Dierks Bentley throwing bras into the crowd, to Sublime making the crowd go crazy at Shakedown, to walking past Toby Keith for a 17 person stage load out or recently saying “excuse me” to Chad Kroeger while squeezing by with a bin, there's always a new story to tell.
I won't discuss the “code brown” crises here.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Perhaps Yung Gravy with bbno$, Post Malone & The Foo Fighters. Then Post Malone and Dave G. play a bunch of Nirvana tunes to close out the evening!!!

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 10

Speaking of safety...
There's an old saying that goes something like this: "If all you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail." At Laketown, we take a MUCH different approach when it comes to addressing the concerns of our guests, and how we interface with each one. Instead of a single, one-size-fits-all security team, we have several specialized safety cohorts roving the property during events, communicating with each other in realtime to properly address any single issue that arises with the appropriate response. One of these teams is tasked with the more nuanced concerns; identifying issues before they grow, vibe-checking, de-escalation, and the general well-being of folks who may just need a helping hand. The head turtle in charge of this team of friendly ninjas is Mark Tuttle, our Safety Team Lead!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
Mobile safety team lead, policy educator, vibe checker.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I've worked at Laketown Ranch for roughly 9 years. I've worked in the live music industry for 24 years.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
I like seeing our hard work preparing for the show transfer into guests being able to forget their troubles for a weekend and live their best lives.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
Good customer service is one of our most effective security/safety plans. Building positive relationships with patrons, and making sure small disruptions are taken care of quickly and efficiently before they become bigger problems is a large part of the proactive approach we've adopted at Laketown.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
A challenging part of the role can be just how many kilometres we walk in a day. Having good shoes, staying hydrated and being well fed makes a huge difference.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
One of my favourite memories was being on shift earlier than usual on a warm sunny morning at Sunfest. Coffee in hand, I walked past the Flats stage on my way back to camp. I heard "From The Earth" performing. The warmth of the sun, the taste of the coffee, the mild early morning exhaustion, and the soulful/atmospheric music coming from the "small" stage made me stop to take it all in. It reminded me why I love doing this.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Hmmm, good question. I think my dream country-ish line up would probability be Cameron Whitcomb, Sarah Osbourne, Black Pistol Fire, The White Buffalo, Rising Appalachia, & Tyler Childers. (Followed by an after party with The Human Experience)

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 9

Throwing a party for 15,000+ people and keeping everyone safe & happy is a complicated task to be sure. Humans can be unpredictable animals, and the safety of every single one of them on site is the single most important concern during any of our events. We have several different specialized teams of security personnel working 24 hours a day across the entire 250 acres of the Ranch. Coordinating this herculean effort is Mr. Cool himself, Jason Stewart - our Site Security Manager!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I am the Security Manager for Laketown Ranch. I coordinate all security, fire, medical, and harm reduction teams to ensure we have the safest events possible.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I’ve been in event security for over 20 years and at the Ranch since it opened, first as a contract security, and the last 5 years in my current position.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
The people! The Laketown Ranch team is amazing! Working directly with artist/tour security is pretty interesting too!

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
Probably just the time and amount of organization it takes to manage these big events. We have over 200 staff that we need to coordinate across many teams, each addressing specific security concerns.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Them! Hahaha, just kidding! I’d probable refer to the last point, just sooo many moving parts!

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
It's a great feeling every time a tour manager or tour security manager tells me that our teams rank with the very best they’ve encountered!

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Dave Matthews Band, Dave Matthews Band, and The Dave Matthews Band…

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 8

Of all the jobs at Laketown, one stands out as uniquely challenging & nuanced. Sailing through an endless and sometimes stormy sea of emails & phone calls, our Box Office Manager is responsible for connecting with our guests months before showtime, to ensure that all of their questions and concerns are resolved, allowing them to arrive worry-free, and ready for an event of a lifetime. The captain at the helm of this ship is the indelible and unflappable Marni Jacobs!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I'm the Box Office Manager. I am responsible for everything on the admissions side of ticketing, including wristbands, camping passes, gift certificates and much more!

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I started in 2009 with Sunfest and have proudly watched it evolve over the years. But I have also worked within the industry in other capacities; from stage set up and live sound, to recording, engineering and creating artist promo packs since 1998.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
I love the family aspect and loyalty of our fans - seeing the same people come attend our events year after year. I also respect the people I work with tremendously, and enjoy working with such a great team.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
I think some people don't realize that this is a year round position, and that basically every single person on-site, I have sent a pass to.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
As we get closer to the event, it is non-stop phone calls, emails & extended hours. I know that people can sometimes get frustrated waiting for a response, not realizing I have 300 emails and calls in front of theirs!

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
My favourite moment is being up in the hayloft, looking out at the crowd of people as the headliner plays, and just seeing the happy faces on everyone. It makes one really feel the energy and how great it is to be a part of something so special - makes it all worthwhile.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
That's really hard to say because there's so much incredible talent out there and my music tastes are quite varied, but it would probably be something from the 90's with alternative rock or even 80-90's country. I think the lineups we had for Sunfest and the Shakedown in 2019 were incredible and I'd love to see those replicated!

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 7

Laketown isn't just about entertainment, it's also about giving back. We are committed to supporting and lifting up our community wherever we can. Since 2017, our events have supported the Laketown Ranch Benevolent Society, raising over $1.5M to benefit local charity groups & initiatives, and bursaries for students pursuing their post-secondary endeavours. At the helm of this operation is the exceptional Melissa Windsor!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I serve as a board member of the Laketown Ranch Benevolent Society. In this role, I handle the administration of the society, liaise with community groups to coordinate 50/50 sales, and help manage the distribution of funds as determined during our board meetings.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I have worked at Laketown Ranch since 2018

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
The most enjoyable part of my job is getting to visit with the community groups we support and seeing firsthand how the funds make a difference. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the positive impact our contributions have, and to connect with the people and programs that benefit from the Benevolent Society’s work.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
Something fans may not know about my position and how the event comes together is the work that happens behind the scenes with our recycling and returns program.
At every event, all empty returns are collected and processed, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to our Benevolent Fund. This fund is used throughout the year to support a number of local community groups, as well as to provide scholarships to graduating students pursuing post-secondary education. Since 2019 when we started our scholarship program, we’ve supported 16 students through four-year post secondary programs, helping them take the next step in their academic and career goals. It’s a small part of the event operations that makes a big impact on our community.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
The most challenging part of my job is having to choose only a select number of amazing groups each year. There are so many deserving organizations doing incredible work in our community, and it’s never easy to narrow down the list.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
One of my favourite memories at the Ranch was when a local theatre group was in charge of selling 50/50 tickets. They showed up dressed in full costumes from their upcoming production of The Lion King and spent the day selling tickets as their characters. It was definitely one of the most entertaining 50/50 crews we’ve ever had!

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
My dream lineup is a blend of classic country with a few up-and-coming artists. I enjoy the energy of the festival environment while giving fans something new to experience each year.

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 6

Dressed all in black, an invisible team of production staff work tirelessly behind the scenes at Laketown, ensuring each artist has everything they need when they take the stage. From stage plots, microphones, guitars & amps, drum kits, etc., literally everything needs to be perfectly in place and perfectly timed for a world-class performance. The person in charge of this critically important team is Spencer Sacht Lund, our amazing Production Manager!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I am the production manager for the entire festival, so I am responsible for all the stages' production, backline, suppliers, and staff. I liaise with each artist to make sure they arrive safe and sound and that all their technical, logistical, and schedule needs are met for their performance.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I have worked at Laketown for 11 years! I've worked in the performance industry for 19 years across 4 different countries.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
I feel it is very satisfying to take the puzzle of each artist's needs and manage to put it all together with a great team of folks.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
I think that a lot of attendees and fans don't know just how much production staffing is involved for a lot of the larger shows between our production suppliers, local crew, and touring crew there can be 60+ folks working on one headliner at times to get the show up and running, and then take it all down again.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Production staffing and equipment are pretty niche, and sometimes there are only a handful of people in Western Canada or even North America that can do certain jobs at a high level - or have a particular amp or piece of gear for rental. Getting it all together in time takes a great team and a great network.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
When we had Snoop perform at the ranch we had to send folks to clean the Dancer Poles... and gather all the fake money. Hard to put that in a job description sometimes haha. There are a lot of laughs backstage in between the moments of pressure. One of the things about live entertainment is that you never know what can happen, and you get to see people at their highest highs and lowest lows and that creates a special camaraderie and bond amongst all departments that do gig work.

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
I would love to see some nostalgic Heavy Rock/Industrial acts from the 90s like NIN, Tool, Deftones, The Prodigy, or Korn.

📣 BREAKING DOWN LAKETOWN! PT. 5

The experience of attending a music festival or large concert at Laketown Amphitheatre is about much more than just what happens on the stages. Just as important as the music, are the offerings in our vendor village, and the food & refreshments available to our guests. The mastermind behind turning our festival bowl into a vibrant market is Marianne Wallis, our Vendor Coordinator!

Q: Briefly explain your role and your responsibilities?
I am the Vendor Coordinator/Manager and am responsible for all things Food and Marketplace Vendors at Sunfest and Laketown Amphitheatre events.

Q: How long have you been working at Laketown/industry?
I have been working at Laketown for 3 seasons. This is my first job in this industry.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
Spending time on-site during the Festival, talking to and assisting attendees and vendors. I very much enjoy the music and the atmosphere, not to mention the great group of people I get to work with who are involved in the whole process.

Q: What is something that fans may not know about your position and how the event comes together?
That vendors start submitting applications in the fall of the previous year and it can take up until a couple of months prior to the event to have a complete food and market lineup.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job that people may not know about?
Combing through the many vendor applications to ensure there is a wide variety of food and Marketplace vendors; with the goal of contributing to the overall great experience for all attendees of the event.

Q: Do you have a favourite moment or funny memory from an event at the Ranch that you can share?
There are many funny moments for sure, but my favourite times are randomly meeting up with friends and family who I may or may not have known were going to be at the shows. Seeing a familiar face in a sea of so many happy festival goers is always fun!

Q: What’s your dream lineup for a festival at Laketown?
Chris Stapleton, George Strait, Darius Rucker, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks
