One of many, many definitions:

Contact improvisation involves improvised movement and dance while in contact with other(s). The improvising part is being aware and present in your body, in the space, with your fellow dancers and letting anything arise out of that spontaneously. The contact part often includes weight sharing, lifting, rolling, counterbalancing, getting to know and playing with the

laws of physics, using momentum and gravity. It is feeling your own movement and meeting others’ movement in a physical conversation. You just follow your own rhythm; sensing your partner and the space.

Exploring CI as a question we will explore the principles and practice of contact improvisation through physical skill work, perceptual tuning, body puzzles and practice time for focused dancing. We will tune our bodies to the physical forces and with each other, finding release and new discoveries in the point of contact, falling, following, leading, changing level, and flying. Unlock your potential and adaptability within the unknown, and discover the dance that is already there.

Coming up with Sara Coffinand Sally Morgan/Eastward!

Contact Dance + Improvisation

A half hour guided warm-up and then 45 mins of facilitated jam/dance time. In our warm-ups we will move towards opening and sharpening the senses, deepening our awareness of our own bodies and those we dance with. Using the foundation of contact improvisation we will explore falling, rolling, giving and taking weight, leading, following, trusting, softening, toning, and listening. Warmups will be led by Sally Morgan and Sara Coffin.

What is Contact Improv?

Contact Improvisation is a movement form, improvisational by nature. Greatly influenced by founder Steve Paxton's training in Martial Arts, dance, and movement, it is an ever evolving system based on the communication between moving bodies and the relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion. A free play with balance, trust, surrender, sensation, abandon, support and instinct, the skills and simple exercises learned in a contact class often lead towards experimenting in free duet dancing. It is an exciting way for people to come together, interact on a physical level, learn how to speak through the body and find their own dance. (If you are wanting more of a warm-up, please join in Explore. Embody. Move. class directly before.)

Steve Paxton, the co-founder of contact improvisation, passed away last Tuesday at age 85. He was an inspiring, creative man. You can see the quality of his embodied gentle presence in videos. He was a central part of the Post Modern Dance movement in NY and had many other projects throughout the years. This is the article that appeared in NY times article
