As we prepare to welcome the Canadian Forces Snowbirds back to Grande Prairie, we take a moment to reflect and remember.
On May 3, 1978, our community experienced a profound loss. During an airshow performance, Captain Gordon De Jong of the Snowbirds lost their life while performing an aerobatic manoeuvre over Grande Prairie. This marked only the second fatality in the Snowbirds’ history, the impact of which has stayed with many in our community ever since.
His loss was felt deeply, most especially by his family, his teammates, and the wider Canadian Armed Forces community. It also remains with those here at home who witnessed the event or were touched by it. Today, we honour Captain De Jong’s service and recognize the courage required of those who take to the skies, understanding the risks that come with it.
The Grande Prairie Regional Airshow was founded, in part, to celebrate and recognize Canada’s military. While we are fortunate to live in a peaceful and free region, moments like this remind us that such freedoms are not without sacrifice.
We also acknowledge the Snowbird 8 Memorial Project, led by the West Peace Aviation Association, which will honour Captain De Jong’s legacy and the enduring spirit of the Snowbirds. The planned Tutor Jet memorial unveiling on May 3, 2027, at the Grande Prairie Airport will serve as a place of reflection for years to come. More information on the project can be found at copaflight184.ca.
We recognize that anniversaries like this can be difficult. To anyone impacted, then or now, we encourage you to take care of yourselves and one another.
We remember. We honour. We are grateful.
