Galiano Concert Society

Galiano Concert Society The Galiano Concert Society is dedicated to bringing live performances by world-renowned musicians to Galiano Island audiences. ♯ ♬ ♫ ♩ ♩ ♬ ♫ ♩ ♩

Although the concert society was legally incorporated in 1999, Galiano Island has a tradition of music and arts presentation that dates back much further, and the concert society grew out of these more informal efforts by a committee of island music lovers. Once incorporated the group became eligible for government funding, and the society has consistently received support from both the BC Touring

Council and the Canada Arts Presentation Fund. This support has helped us present music of the highest quality by artists with international reputations at ticket prices islanders can afford. Over the years our season has included performances by pianists Jon Kimura Parker, Marc Andre Hamelin, Ian Parker and Sarah Davis Buechner, vocalists Suzie LeBlanc and Russell Braun, and the Borealis, St Petersburg, and New Orford String Quartets, among many others. Our jazz and world music cabarets have featured the likes of La Candela, Tango Paradiso, Marc Atkinson, Safa and Celso Machado. In co-operation with our local elementary school, we have also scheduled numerous school concerts that give students a chance to hear, talk to and learn from these great musicians. Most of our concerts are held at the South Galiano Community Hall, and each of these concerts now also features an accompanying display by one of Galiano's many fine visual artists. The Galiano Concert Society is an entirely volunteer-run organization. The board of directors, aided by a few additional volunteers, do everything from planning and publicizing the concerts to setting up the hall and providing refreshments.

GALIANO CONCERT SEEKING VOLUNTEERS. Can you help?

The board members of Galiano Concert Society would like to extend an invitation to potential new board members. We have a terrific board filled with diligent, enthusiastic and smart people, and we are on the lookout for new ideas and help. We typically meet prior to performances including via Zoom to cover all aspects: ensuring artists are hosted; booking the venue; promoting events through ticketing, posters, advertising, articles in the Active page; helping to organize concert activities like intermission snacks; preparing the venue including lighting and chair set up; clearing up the venue.

Board members also participate in suggesting new artists and styles of music. You may be taking minutes, contributing to discussions about logistics, grant applications and helping to create a vision for future musical endeavours. It’s a lovely group of people to work with and a rewarding experience to see a grass roots arts organization thrive. Sounds like hard work? Not really; please consider being part of the organization. We typically meet once a month except in the summer.

If you have some interest in joining us, or would like to speak with someone who could tell you more without committing yourself, please contact [email protected].

Sujit Vaidya - Friday, May 22 7:30pm South Hall

Experience the artistry of Bharatanatyam in SAMAR: {summit; k**a}, a captivating performance led by acclaimed dancer Sujit Vaidya. Accompanied by live Carnatic music, this presentation honours the choreographies of his guru, A. Lakshman, while exploring the layered meanings of “samar”—from the Sanskrit representation of K**a, the God of Eros, to the Urdu interpretation of a summit or peak. Through intricate movement and evocative storytelling, SAMAR delves into themes of desire, intimacy, and transcendence.

Featuring an exceptional ensemble of musicians—Curtis Andrews (mridangam), Arno Kamolika (nattuvangam), Sheema Balakrishna (vocals), and Shriram Rajagopalan (violin)—this production brings the full depth of Bharatanatyam’s musical and rhythmic traditions to life. Beyond its technical mastery, SAMAR challenges colonial hierarchies in the performing arts, celebrating South Asian classical traditions while engaging with contemporary conversations on queerness, stillness, and gaze. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness Bharatanatyam in its most immersive and thought-provoking form.
