Two cyborgs meet at an abandoned coffee shop to share memories from their long-forgotten humanity before having their consciousnesses uploaded to the cloud.

Ethan White is a non-binary artist based in unceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories, colonially known as Vancouver, BC and who hails from Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta–Treaty 6 Territory). Their work spans the mediums of film, photography, dance, digital art, drawing, and painting, and often tackles subjects of humanity’s relationship with technology, gender identity, and the intersections those topics share with absurd spirituality. Ethan believes in the ability of art to affect social change, and strives to side-step the obtuse pretentiousness of art gallery culture by creating works that are both covertly challenging, yet entertaining enough to remain widely accessible. How is a room supposed to change if you are only speaking to those privileged enough to listen? The artist is then drawn toward an exploratory and collaborative approach to cultural production, as they wish to undermine the western concept of an artist’s singular perspective. Ethan cherishes the community that art-making brings together, and aspires to be a helping hand in amplifying the voices of marginalized communities on Turtle Island and beyond.

ON THE GLUE/ Dave Johnson/ Canada/ 3:02

From the depths of London England’s Barracks district amongst the derelict weapons huts, comes a public service expose from the 1970’s revealing “THE HORRORS” of kids participating in the act of glue sniffing. The narrative is told in three parts: The reporter, a mother, and her “addict son” David.

The overt metaphor presented in this film reveals similar systemic problems and stereotypes of addiction and mental health which occupy every city on all corners of the earth.

This film and its title have been appropriated from a 1970’s BBC expose. The visual treatment exposed the footage (and the filmmaker) by gluing pieces of film together then ripping it apart. This becomes an interesting metaphor of creating using the substance of the problem presented in the film. The film was edited by hand and sequenced using measurements to time each shot.

CHLOROPHYLL FEVER/ Cristina Licinio/ Italy/ 4:03

A body and the plants it loves draw closer until the border dissolves. Flesh yearns to be eaten, to be cut and regrow. Absorb the light between its holes. The skin opens, the roots push through. Nothing really ends, Breath begins anew.

Cristina Licinio (Bari, 2001) is a filmmaker based in Venice. Their practice moves through ecologically sensitive experimental filmmaking, engaging with matter through processes of organic destruction and ecodeveloping. They explore the body, their own and that of the film strip, as a surface of erosion and transcorporeal desire, working with plants and the non-human in an empathic and viscous way. They work in a photographic archive at Palazzo Fortuny Museum and collaborate with an Art Brut gallery.

"I can't stop dreaming about turning into a plant. Feel from every pore, see beneath the ground. Touch everything, noticing the invisible. Be able to be cut, everywhere, drink all the rain I can. Sense the roots creep, rubbing against my skin, Long to be eaten, absorb the light between my holes. I see myself disappear, can't wait to regrow. I envy their ability of speech, they truly understand my needs. My human life ends, i arouse myself, i'm turning plant."

An arrangement of found image sources from the 16th Century onward, the film looks at the changing representations of the giant star at the center of the solar system. From celestial maps to telescopic photos, the film traces the sun as a natural constant, a mirror of human curiosity, and a radiant symbol of mystery.

Derek Taylor creates films that explore the intersection of documentary and experimental filmmaking, with a particular emphasis on themes of history and landscape. He often examines the tension between the temporary and the enduring aspects of lived experience, using formal and textural elements to explore this dynamic. His films, frequently created using analog and photochemical techniques, have screened at festivals around the world and invite viewers to reflect on how we observe and remember the world around us. Taylor holds a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is currently based in Connecticut, USA.

The Fifth Floor is an ascent. It takes us on a journey through layered imagery that includes 8mm home movies decayed by time, luminous kaleidoscopic patterns, and sacred geometry. The two visual worlds compete and collide. Moments of clarity dissolve. Ultimately it becomes a meditation on the beauty of loss, decay, and transcendence.

David Baeumler is a USA-based artist working in moving image. His films blend experimental collage, voice-over, and found footage to explore memory, perception, and uncertainty. His work has screened internationally at venues including IFFR, Anthology Film Archives, the Biennale of Sydney, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
