The Great River Ontario Health Team has launched the Community Voices Collective, a new initiative inviting residents to help shape local health and social services across Cornwall, SDG, Akwesasne, Russell Township, and parts of Southeast Ottawa.

Community members can share feedback through surveys, focus groups, conversations, and engagement events designed to gather lived experiences and ideas for improving care.

The Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District has launched a second DUO Support Group to help people experiencing early-stage cognitive changes and the loved ones supporting them.

The monthly program provides separate peer support groups for individuals living with dementia or cognitive changes and their caregivers, helping participants connect, share experiences, and access resources in a safe and supportive environment.

“We want people to know that it does exist, that it is a safe space,” said First Link Care Navigator Jenna Mancini.

The Children’s Treatment Centre received a $10,000 donation during a cheque presentation at Co-operators Insurance in Cornwall.

The contribution was made by Bill and Darlene McGimpsey and their daughter Allysa, marking the family’s fifth $10,000 donation to the organization.

The 59th annual Cornwall Lions Club Sports Award Banquet celebrated local athletes, coaches, and community leaders on May 13 at the Best Western in Cornwall.

Among the evening’s top honours, Landen Sinfield received the prestigious Jacques Richard Trophy as Top Sports Personality, while Matt Lewis earned the Joe Assaly Award as Top Junior Athlete. The event also recognized numerous student-athletes, volunteers, and community contributors across a wide range of sports.

The City of Cornwall and Cornwall Police are asking residents for help following recent vandalism at the Cornwall Youth Park and the Bandshell in Lamoureux Park.

City staff spent approximately 11 hours cleaning graffiti and restoring the affected areas after incidents captured on security cameras at the Bandshell on May 10.

Acting Chief Chad Maxwell said police have seen a concerning rise in vandalism in local parks and public spaces and confirmed increased evening and overnight patrols will continue.

Claude Poirier has become the first-ever recipient of the Russell “Russ” J. Cadeau Lifetime of Service Award, a new provincial honour recognizing exceptional dedication to the Knights of Columbus, the church, and the community.

A member since 1977, Poirier has spent decades volunteering, leading community initiatives, and helping raise more than $1.5 million for charitable causes through the council’s work.

“It was certainly heartwarming,” Poirier said of receiving the award during the Ontario State Convention. “Very happy to receive it.”

Internationally touring cellist and vocalist Ian Maksin returned to Cornwall on May 16 with a genre-blending performance at the Seaway Valley Theatre as part of his “Songs of Love & Peace” tour.

Combining cello, vocals, live looping, and music from cultures around the world, Maksin performed songs in multiple languages while blending classical, jazz, flamenco, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European influences.

“It’s hard to place myself into any one specific genre,” Maksin said. “It’s pretty much a combination of very many genres put together.”

More than $8,100 was raised for the Children’s Treatment Centre during Comedy for a Cause at the DEV Hotel & Conference Centre on May 9.

Presented by Cornwall Toyota, the fundraiser featured performances by Dan Allaire, Rory Gardiner, Alex Wood, and Rick Lemieux, while also serving as a tribute to the late Richard Allaire.

Organizer Dan Allaire said the event honoured his father’s memory while supporting children and families across the region through the CTC.
