Putting more money back in Canadians’ pockets

The government is introducing the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit – formerly the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Credit. We are increasing its amount by 25% for five years beginning in July 2026.

In addition to that, we are providing a one-time payment, equivalent to a 50% increase this year.

Combined, this means that a family of four will receive up to $1,890 this year, and about $1,400 a year for the next four years; and a single person will receive up to $950 this year, and about $700 a year for the next four years.

The new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will provide additional, significant support for more than 12 million Canadians.

Our plan is moving Canada’s economy from reliance to resilience, though some of the biggest long-term payoffs of this transformation will take time to be felt.

The need is great — and it’s right here, right now.

• Over 25% of Canadians are facing food insecurity
• 2.2 million food bank visits every month
• Food bank use has doubled since 2019
• 1 in 3 people using food banks are children
• The fastest-growing group? Working, double-income families

As Food Banks Canada CEO, Kirsten Beardsley speaks with Vassy Kapelos ahead of meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, she’s bringing forward the voices of people in need — and the urgent reality facing food banks across the country.

Here in our community, we’re proud to be part of a solution.

Sharecrows shows what’s possible when creativity, fun, and compassion come together to make a real difference — with dignity for those receiving support and meaningful impact for local food banks.

👉 👉 Will you help us grow Sharecrows beyond our community?
We’re proud to host Sharecrows here — and now we’re inviting our supporters to help spread the word to service clubs, community groups, and towns outside our the country.

If you know a Rotary, Lions, Optimist, Chamber, women’s group, or community organizer in another town, please share Sharecrows with them. Together, we can help more communities create local impact and support food banks where the need is growing fastest.

While we continue to wrap up and share final numbers with everyone, we want to ask you to keep the Sharecrows Spirit Alive 💛
The need to restock our food banks doesn't end.
And the spirit of giving doesn’t have to end when the scarecrows come down.

With the festive holiday season before us, here are a few simple ways to keep the Spirit of Sharecrows going:
⭐ Swap the traditional hostess gift of a bottle of wine or a box of chocolate for a food bank donation in their name
⭐ “A family for a family” — provide a holiday meal for a local household
⭐ Hosting a dinner or party? Invite guests to bring a bag of non-perishable food items
⭐ Pick up one extra grocery item each shop for the food bank donation bin
⭐ Celebrate birthdays/anniversaries by giving back
⭐ Giving Tuesday - Dec 2 - drop off non-perishables at one of our food banks or into a grocery store collection bin

Small gestures. Big impact.
The Sharecrows spirit feeds communities all year long.
