Mystery Handbag
In Memory of Those Loved and Lost

This special mystery handbag has been generously donated in loving memory of those who are deeply missed but never forgotten.

It is a tribute to the many loved ones whose lives continue to be remembered through the stories we share, the memories we hold close, and the love that remains long after they are gone.

May their memories live on in the hearts of family and friends, and may this tribute help support the compassionate care that Hospice provides to others when they need it most.

Honouring lives. Supporting care. Giving back.

Scott Wesley McKinlay

Scott was raised and lived on the McKinlay family farm, where he and his wife Pam raised their family. The farm remained a place of great meaning to Scott, and he loved nothing more than spending time on the porch with loved ones, including his daughters, Kerry and Nikki, and their families. His grandsons, Harrison Scott and Oscar Jay, brought him immense joy and were a constant source of pride.

Scott was deeply committed to his community, generously giving his time through volunteer work with the Optimist Club, the Lambton-Kent District School Board, and as a transplant ambassador. A proud Mason, he was a member of Kent Lodge #274 AF & AM in Blenheim and the Blenheim Shrine Club.

He was also a supporter of Chatham-Kent Hospice, serving as a board member from 2014 to 2021. In 2018, Scott and his family experienced the compassion and care of Hospice firsthand when Pam, his wife of 40 years, was a resident. In the years that followed, he remained a dedicated advocate for Hospice and its mission.

Scott carried on his father’s legacy with Mossbank Kennels, breeding Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and later, with Pam, developed Kinlayke Kennels, continuing their shared passion for purebred dogs.

Always ready for an adventure, Scott loved to travel and often spoke fondly of the many β€œtrips of a lifetime” he enjoyed, including visits to Australia. In later years, he was fortunate to find love again with Joanne Trinca, whose presence brought renewed joy and companionship to his life.

Known for his boundless energy, Scott was never one to sit still and always had a project on the go. He will be remembered for his generosity, humour, resilience, and hospitality. A gifted storyteller and natural entertainer, Scott brought people togetherβ€”most memorably through the annual Pig Roast that he and his family hosted for 48 years.

Scott’s generosity and strength of character enriched every life he touched. He was an incredible father, a devoted partner, a proud grandfather, and a true friend. His love of family, commitment to community, and gift of laughter will be remembered always.

Platinum Bag
In Memory of
Deb Shewburg

Debby Shewburg was a woman whose heart was as generous as it was strong. Alzheimer’s may have dimmed parts of her memory, but it could never erase the love she poured into the lives of those around her or the kindness she showed to everyone she met.

Family was everything to Debby. She had an incredible way of sensing when someone needed help and was always the first to show up, often with one of her famous lasagnas in hand. Helping others was never an obligation for herβ€”it was simply who she was.

One of her greatest joys was cheering on her grandchildren. Whether it meant early mornings, late nights, or long drives, she was always there, smiling, cheering loudly, and bursting with pride.

Debby also loved the feeling of being part of a team. Whether she was swinging a bat, throwing a rock down the ice, or cheering on her beloved Blue Jays, she embraced every moment with enthusiasm and joy.

Through everything, she lived by a simple but powerful message: β€œAlways be kind.” It was more than adviceβ€”it was the way she lived her life, and the gift she leaves with all of us.

She is deeply missed, but her legacy lives on in every act of kindness, every shared meal, and every moment of family togetherness.

Catherine Mifflin

Catherine (Whyte) Mifflin found joy in the simple things life had to offer. She was known for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for her family and friends. Many people in the community remember Catherine from her many years working in the Stationery Department at Zellers. She began her career there when the store opened in Chatham in 1964 and continued until her well-deserved retirement.

After retiring, Catherine devoted much of her time to travelling with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved attending their sporting events, cheering them on from the sidelines, and celebrating their achievements. These moments together created lasting memories for everyone who shared them.

Catherine was also an avid bowler. Her home was filled with trophies marking her many successes throughout the years. Her passion for the sport was infectious, inspiring many family members to take up bowling themselves. In 2012, Catherine and her grandson achieved a remarkable milestone by winning Silver in the Ontario Twosomes.

A dedicated member of St. Andrews United Church, Catherine was also active in the United Church Women (UCW). She believed strongly in giving back to her community and was always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.

When the local hospice was built, Catherine attended the open house along with many others in the community. Having experienced the loss of her husband to cancer and many visits to the hospital, she deeply understood the importance of compassionate care and support for families during difficult times.

Catherine’s spirit lives on in the many lives she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and love, inspiring those who knew her to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, cherish their loved ones, and support their community.

Thomas Edward β€œTom” Richardson

Tom Richardson was born in 1924 on the family farm in Kent Centre. He was one of seven childrenβ€”five boys and two girls. Sadly, he never had the opportunity to grow up with his two sisters, who passed away from whooping cough before he was born.

Tom’s education ended after Grade 8, as he was needed at home to help work the fields and milk the cattle. Despite his limited formal schooling, he possessed a wisdom that those who knew him deeply admired.

In 1947, Tom married his beloved wife and together they began their life on a farm in Woodstock. After a few years, they returned to Kent County and settled on the Richardson family homestead in Kent Centre. For many years, Tom and his wife worked tirelessly milking dairy cattle twice a day, seven days a week. Eventually, they sold their dairy herd and transitioned to raising beef cattle.

Tom was the proud father of three childrenβ€”John, Dan, and Deborah. He was also blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he adored, and who adored him in return.

Deeply devoted to his community, Tom generously gave his time and energy to many local organizations. He served as a board member at St. Paul’s United Church, a trustee at S.S. No. 2 Public School, and as a member of Harwich Council. His compassion for his neighbours and his community was evident in everything he did.

Tom passed away on December 31, 2013, just shy of his 90th birthday. His legacy of hard work, wisdom, and devotion to family and community continues to live on.

Trish Johnston

Trish was the definition of a beautiful soulβ€”an angel who lit up every room she entered with her radiant smile and warm heart. Knowing her was truly a gift to all who had the privilege.

She was a hardworking and passionate woman in both her professional and personal life. Trish’s greatest joys were her family and friends, and especially her role as β€œMimi” to her five beloved granddaughters. She cherished every moment she was blessed to spend with them.

Those who knew Trish also knew her love for shoes and purses. In her honour, this purseβ€”one of her favourite brands in her favourite colour combinationβ€”has been lovingly donated to celebrate her memory.

May Trish always be remembered for her big heart, her boundless love, and the kindness she so freely shared with everyone around her.

Marie Louise Vanroboys

Marie Louise (Casier) Vanroboys was reunited with many members of her family in Heaven on October 3, 2023. Born in Belgium, she became a proud Canadian and lived a long and remarkable life. In her 99th year, she was grateful to still be living in her own home, something that brought her great happiness and independence.

β€œGramma Van” was a proud, strong, and faithful woman throughout her life. She found joy in many of life’s simple pleasures β€” a good cup of coffee, visits with family and friends, old country music, and watching her favourite shows.

Family meant everything to her. She loved hearing stories about her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Her growing family brought her immense joy, especially in her later years. At family gatherings, she could often be found quietly watching, smiling as she took in the moments around her.

She enjoyed sitting on her back porch for a quiet visit, or on the front porch when she wanted to see what was happening in the neighbourhood. A devoted woman of faith, she was a regular at church on Sunday mornings until her health made it difficult to attend. Even then, she continued to enjoy gospel music and visits from members of her church community.

Marie Louise attended the Handbags for Hospice event a few years ago and truly loved the experience. Her family knows she would be honoured to have a handbag sponsored in her memory.

Ben E. β€œJunior” Liberty
A Husband, A Father, A Papa, and A Farmer.

Ben (Jr.) faced his battle with cancer with remarkable strength and grace, never letting it overshadow his focus on the people he loved. Even in difficult times, his concern was always for his family, and his courage quietly inspired everyone around him.

He had passions that brought him joy β€” puzzles that challenged his sharp mind, classic cars that reflected his love of history and craftsmanship, and old westerns that filled his evenings with adventure and nostalgia. But it wasn’t just his hobbies that defined him. Ben (Jr.) had a heart big enough to make everyone feel like family. His kindness, generosity, and warmth left a mark on every person he met.

Ben (Jr.) had a wonderful sense of humour and a gift for making people smile. He was an extraordinary storyteller, spinning tales that left everyone laughing, amazed, or simply feeling connected to him. His life was full β€” full of love, laughter, hard work, and meaningful moments shared with those he cherished most.

Family meant everything to Ben (Jr.). He was always the first to offer support, lend a hand, or show up when someone needed him β€” never seeking recognition, only giving freely and wholeheartedly. Whether as a husband, father, papa, or friend, he led with love, patience, and unwavering devotion.

We honour Ben (Jr.) not only for the life he lived, but for the legacy he leaves behind β€” a life defined by love, kindness, laughter, and service to others. In his memory, we are proud to recognize him with a tribute handbag, a symbol of the enduring love we will continue to carry with us.
