George (1st) Simmons Farm in Charlottetown, PEI
George (1st) Simmons (My GG Grandfather)was a businessman (Ginger Beer) and farmer. His farm(s) extended out North River Road on the attached. His family donated land for Simmons Arena, Simmons Sports Field, Queen Charlotte Intermediate School, Colonel Gray Senior High School, Colonel Gray Sports Field, Spring Park United Church etc. He lived and had his business at the corner of Spring Park Road and Kirkwood Drive. The house is still there. He owned a farm or number of farms along North River Road probably for some of his children. The Road is marked on the attached.

He and his family were from Kingston, PEI where he was buried. You can see the grave yard on the attached. The Farm surrounding the grave yard was owned by his son John Francis Simmon(d)s (My Great Grandfather) and brother to George H Simmons who continues in the Ginger Beer business. The church you have seen in photographs has since burned down.

Panoramic View of Charlottetown 1878
George & Harriet died in 1881 but their house, barns and farm are clear on the attached photo. On my screen the photo is 9.5" x 4.75"...so 6.75 from the left and 4.0" from the bottom will get you there. Their farm(s) run out North River Road parallel to the North River on the left side of the photograph. The top of the photo is north. The house is clearly visible in the right corner of the second field. The attached is a sketch. I don't know how they did it....no airplanes or sophisticated cameras in those days. It is very accurate. See attached.

In the 1800's they travelled significant distances by horse and wagon. The first car on PEI was owned by a Priest in 1866. The PEI government voted to ban automobiles from the Island in 1908, when there were only seven cars on the Island, due to residents' concerns over "their safety, that they frightened horses and livestock, and due to the quality of Island roads".

I attach the family tree so you will understand why we refer to George as the "1st". There are lots of George's and John's. See attached.
