Our event this year will actually NOT include a chode-like route up the QE2.... This year's challenge is a bit different...

Welcome to our 10th annual Great Be**er Challenge Event!

GBC 2026 – “To Infinity, and Beyond!”

Proudly supported by the Calgary Sports Car Club

Date: August 22-23, 2026

Registration: msreg.com/GBC2026

Route:

Day 1: Calgary, AB – Saunders, AB (approx. 338km)

Day 2: Saunders, AB – Calgary, AB (approx. 363km)

Goal:

Adventure trip with unlikely be**er cars, trucks, and vans. Points awarded for creativity, ridiculousness, and misfortune. This is NOT a race, and any illegal road behavior is punishable by law, and not condoned by the organizers.

Entrants may be solo, or in teams to help split costs.

This year’s event is going to contain large stretches of travel on gravel roads, in areas of low service. Be prepared, and pray that it doesn’t rain!

Budget:

$999 CDN to buy, repair, and modify a vehicle. (Foreigners use current exchange rates)

YES!! Due to tariffs, and the average value of vehicles these days, the GBC has retained the increased budget!

Safety items such as tires and brakes, as well as fluids and filters do NOT count toward budget.

A Safety item can be considered as something which would make the vehicle safe to operate, without adding to the reliability of the vehicle. Any questions regarding whether an item is safety or not, please see our FAQ page.

Proof of purchase price (bill of sale), and receipts to prove total spent on vehicle must be presented. Please provide a copy of the original ad if you can as well.
Any parts obtained for free, traded for, or pulled out of personal collections are counted at junkyard prices toward your budget. (You can use the Pick N Pull website to look up part values.)

Any cars obtained via trade or free, are valued at a fair market value (on the cheap side). Any questions regarding the value of a vehicle, please send me an email.
Teams can attempt to sell parts off their cars to gain money back toward the budget, up to a maximum of 50% the original purchase price.

Vehicles which run over budget can still enter, however will receive a penalty of -3pts per $1 over budget.

Entry fee:

$60, if paid before July 18th, 2026. Late entry fee for after this date is $100.
These funds go to cover the event insurance, expenses, awards, decals for competitors, and any remaining money is donated directly to our chosen charity.

Camping:

TBA

Charity:

Good News Auto Mechanic: The Jumpstart Fund

Real Help. Real Dignity. Real Results.
Driven to Renew is about more than fixing problems. We help families stay working and housed by supporting essential needs like emergency home repairs, utility relief, and critical vehicle repairs. Every act of support is paired with education, because real stability grows from understanding, not just assistance. Through our earlier JumpStart program, we helped more than 500 families move forward. Today, Driven to Renew continues that legacy with a renewed commitment to hope and long term stability.

Eligibility:

Any street legal (insured and registered) vehicle. Temporary “In Transit” permits are OK.

Due to event insurance regulations, Teams MUST provide a completed copy of the ASN Self-Tech Declaration form, indicating that you declare your vehicle to be road worthy. We will provide a link to entrants to print and sign these forms prior to the event.

There will also be an electronic liability waiver (speedwaiver) that must be signed on or before the morning of the event. This must be signed by all participants, INCLUDING passengers. A minors waiver will be available for the parent/guardian of underage passengers to sign.

Scoring:

Competitors will be scored based on multiple categories. Scoring takes place at the start of the event based on vehicle and team entry, and again at the finish based on pictures taken/challenges achieved on the trip.

Age of vehicle:

+50 for 1990s

+100 for 1980s

+150 for 1970s

+200 for 1960s

+250 for 1950s

Make of Vehicle:

+-0 for Japanese, American, German

+50 for Korean, Swedish

+200 for Italian

+225 for English

+250 for French, or Chinese

+100 for a defunct automaker, and +50 for every decade past 1990 the automaker has been out of business

Judge’s Decision:
+0-250 for Costumes, Theme, Vehicle Modifications

+0-250 for General condition of vehicle/likeliness to fail

On the Road:

+50 for finishing the day’s route

+10 and up, for optional checkpoints and challenges en route

+100 for a factory convertible with the soft or hard top removed

+200 pts for outfitting vehicle with sleeping accommodations, and subsequently camping in.

Special points:

+50 pts for more than 3 factory-installed ashtrays or cigarette lighters (either-or, points not for both)

+100 pts for a working CB radio (must include whip antenna – handheld CB radios do not count)

+150 pts for a factory digital speedometer or tachometer (either-or, points not for both)

+200 pts if you’re hauling a boat that you got for the leftover budget money after buying your car (boat must be fiberglass or metal, not inflatable)

+200 points if your car has those motorized seatbelts manufacturers thought would be a good idea instead of installing airbags (they must still be working and functional as seatbelts)

Feature Car:

This is a car that would usually not be a high scoring car, or something a bit obscure, that we will issue bonus points to a team which runs one in the event.

This year's car - Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler Neon +200 (+ 50pts if it’s a Dodge, to compensate for the Plymouth/Chrysler points… + 50pts if it’s a 2 door DOHC 5 speed in nice enough shape that Matt and Peter wants to buy it)

The Dodge Neon being chosen as the unofficial hero (or victim) of the Great Be**er Challenge 2026 is honestly perfect—because no car better understands the phrase “questionable life choices on a budget.”

Not because it’s reliable—but because it has absolutely nothing left to lose. This is a car that was born cheap, lived cheap, and now thrives in environments where duct tape is considered an OEM-approved upgrade. Its engine? Somehow both eager and on the verge of emotional breakdown. In a challenge where survival, creativity, and chaos matter more than speed, the Dodge Neon isn’t just competing—it’s culturally aligned.

It’s not the best car.
It’s not even a good car.
But in the Great Be**er Challenge… it might just be the most honest car.

From the Corner Gas TV series... More👇

This 1990s Ford Aspire was Wanda Dollard's car and in the then photo, it's out front of Corner Gas, with the Ruby Diner in the background. The show ended in 2009 and still has quite the following.

Fast forward to 2023 and her old car makes an appearance at the Great Be**er Challenge 2023. It came with paperwork. That's GBC organizer Peter Brook and it was his command vehicle for the event.

The Great Be**er Challenge is a convoy of the damned taking place over two days and about a thousand kilometres. The concept is simple: cross your fingers, drive a junker cross-country and survive the ordeal.

We've documented the event a couple times and it's the most fun and excitement you could ever have. On the 2023 run, some 40 be**ers travelled from Fort Macleod Alberta to Ainsworth BC and back. Most survived!

AND That's a wrap on the Great Be**er Challenge 2025. We are honored to be able to host this event for it's 9th year of operation, and what a fantastic weekend it was!

We had an action packed route this year with over 69 (giggity) clues to find. spread out around east-central Alberta on many roads less travelled.

We thank all the participants who continue to enjoy this event every year, and all of our participants who have braved the Great Be**er Challenge for the first time. Some of our competitors have come from great distances to partake in the challenge, including Edmonton, Peace River, swift current, and moose jaw! Big shoutout to you guys!

A huge shoutout goes to all the volunteers who stepped up to help with scoring, and Clem and Garrett for running our Sweep operations. This event wouldn't happen without them. and big shoutout to Calgary Sports Car Club for supporting us in our crazy annual adventure!

Next year will be the 10th anniversary for the Great Be**er Challenge, and we have some very big ideas for it! Stay tuned...
.......Oh, and the scores, I will work on having them posted sometime in the next couple of days ;)

Teams are now arriving for scoring and the awards are prepared!
