With BC CX Provincials happening this weekend in Chilliwack, we are going down to a way back time when ValleyCross hosted , circa 2017 in Abbotsford.

That year had a stacked elites men’s race, with defending BC CX Champion and two crazy fast Albertans.

This was the first time we saw racing. Michael was constantly & tactical in his laps, and eventually went on to win the race, while Craig (being the strongest and highest placed BC licensed rider) went on to win another consecutive BC CX Championship title that year.

Michael eventually moved to the Fraser Valley and continued to support our local cycloross scene and our emerging local that year.

Why are we talking about Michael? Besides being a chill, down-to-earth guy, Michael also announced his retirement from the Elite ranks of CX this year.

We want to acknowledge Michael’s dedication and hard work for being able to stay at the front end of the domestic and international racing over the years.

Fairly certain we’ll continue to see Michael at local races, mentoring and coaching our next generation of young racers.

I’m going to let everyone behind the curtain for a little bit.

Event organizing is a passion project through and through. There’s tens of dollars to be made. Especially post Covid.

Race organizers in our local CX community are hosting events because of their passion for cyclocross. Full stop. We love cyclocross, and that’s why we organize races.

It typically takes a minimum of $6000 to put on a bare bones event. The market will only bare a $35-$40 entrance fees. So, an organizers needs 160 - 180 racers to come close to breaking even. And most events are are self-financed by the organizer(s). This is why it’s a passion project. We are do it for the love of the sport, not a get-rich-fast scenario.

Post Covid, there has been an explosion of events that have been differed to the Fall this year. There’s gravel events, road events, mtb events and cyclocross events. The calendar is super packed!!! It’s great for the racers. But conversely, not super ideal for the event organizer, as we are all vying for the same athletes to come and attend our event(s).

For me, I pride myself on organizing the best possible event that I can. Building a reputation by providing value and experiences. Hopefully anyone who has attended a past ValleyCross event, or Ride for Water event, has experienced this first hand.

This year, I unfortunately have to defer ValleyCross from its tentative September 17th time slot , due to unfavorable event hosting conditions.

It’s not the fault of any one thing, just an accumulation of things that keep added up.

ValleyCross will be hosted again. I don’t have an exact date. It may possibly be at an non-traditional (for the lower mainland) time slot but this event will be hosted again.

And this isn’t a boo-woo post that event organizer have it rough. It’s just me communicating to you, to help you understand all the consideration that go into organizing an event.

We’ll race bikes together again. It just not going to be on September 17th.

Remember, ride your bike, cause it will put a smile on your face. 📸

We’re still beside ourselves with the amount of support we received this weekend from our lower mainland . We will be presenting a cheque later this week to , but I would like to highlight for now,and his personal donation to the for Sumas Prairie residents and farm workers. A lot of these folks won’t be going back to their homes for some time yet. Emergency supplies needed to get the through in the mean time is greatly appreciated. So a big thank-you to the Dutchman, and to everyone that helped to collect over a 1000lbs in non-perishable items.

Our answered the call for help. Today, we spent a few hours going to various organizations, to deliver the much appreciated food drive items everyone collected on behalf of ValleyCross. I’m estimating we had over +1000lbs, based on how the trailer felt towing home. This truly warms my heart knowing our community can come together to help provide for the residents of .
