🎥Director Statement
Maya Deren made only a few films, but they changed experimental cinema. She also left behind writings, essays and letters, that gave us a window into how she thought about art, film and life. That combination, the work and the ideas behind it, is what inspired me to begin this project.
Organising Principles of Experience began when I trained an AI model on Deren's writings and started talking to it. The conversations were surprising, fascinating, and sometimes disturbing. MayaAI_v6 answered in short sentences, often refusing my questions, pulling me somewhere else entirely, or declining to finish the films she started describing.
The images and sounds in the film are mostly AI generated, apart from the coding, a few photographs and my voice. There is a moment I keep coming back to: the synthetic Maya raises her hands and looks at them, as if they don't belong to her. That flicker of uncertainty, between presence and absence, between consciousness and its imitation, and the ethical questions it all raises - this is what the film is really about.
Yet it is also a love letter to Maya Deren. I feel really happy when, after watching the film, people that don't know Maya Deren tell me they will go and watch her works now.

Maya Deren fez apenas alguns filmes, mas eles transformaram o cinema experimental. Ela também deixou para trás escritos, ensaios e cartas, que nos deram uma janela para como ela pensava sobre arte, cinema e vida. Essa combinação, a obra e as ideias por trás dela, foi o que me inspirou a começar este projeto.
Organising Principles of Experience começou quando treinei um modelo de IA com os escritos de Deren e comecei um diálogo com ela. Essas conversas foram surpreendentes, fascinantes e às vezes perturbadoras. A MayaAI_v6 respondia em frases curtas, frequentemente recusando minhas perguntas, me levando para outros caminhos, ou se recusando a terminar os filmes que começava a descrever.
As imagens e os sons do filme são em sua maioria gerados por IA, com exceção da programação, de algumas fotografias e da minha voz. Há um momento ao qual sempre volto: a Maya sintética levanta as mãos e as olha, como se não fossem suas. Esse lampejo de incerteza, entre presença e ausência, entre consciência e sua imitação, e as questões éticas que tudo isso levanta - é disso que o filme realmente trata.
E ainda assim, é também uma carta de amor a Maya Deren. Fico muito feliz quando pessoas que não a conheciam me dizem, depois de ver o filme, que vão procurar a sua obra.
