Jonathan received his undergraduate degree from Cambridge University and his medical training at The London Hospital Medical School in the UK. He trained in Internal Medicine in the Royal Air Force and in Allergy and Immunology at Guy’s Hospital London and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was appointed to the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1993 where he researched the regulation of eicosanoid generation and the human Leukocyte Immunoglobulin-Like Receptors, saw patients with allergies and asthma, and was intimately involved in the training program in Allergy and Immunology. April 2009 Jonathan joined the Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research where he conducted translational research and early phase clinical trials in immune-mediated diseases. In October 2014 he was appointed Translational Medicine Head for Autoimmunity, Transplantation and Inflammation. He joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in June 2017 to lead the Translational Sciences team, supporting the accelerated translation of a broad portfolio of global health interventions into the clinic, including drugs, vaccines, biologics, devices, and microbiome and nutritional interventions. He retired from the foundation in June 2023 and works as a consultant in translational medicine. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. He is married with three grown children. His pastimes include cooking, woodwork, gardening and cycling.

Prof. Cassatella has a degree in Medicine and Surgery and specializes in Clinical Biology. He carries out research in the fields of inflammation, immunology, and cancer. In particular, he studies the role of human neutrophils and monocytes in inflammatory diseases and tumors. He has received various awards, including the "Bonazinga Award" from the Society of Leukocyte Biology (USA) in 2017.
