What if Europe could source more of its critical raw materials from its own waste streams? ♻️

As part of the European FutuRaM project, VITO mapped the presence and recovery potential of critical raw materials in slags, ashes and other waste streams.

The results show significant potential: by 2050, Europe could recover between 4.1 and 5.7 million tonnes of critical raw materials from waste every year, potentially substituting up to 56% of primary import demand.

VITO also contributed to a harmonised framework for evaluating recycling projects and developed a method to help policymakers prioritise the raw materials that matter most.

Turning Europe’s waste into a valuable resource can help strengthen circularity, resource security and the resilience of European industry.

VITO and Xoople are joining forces to bring Earth intelligence to enterprise scale. 🌍

This new strategic partnership combines VITO’s scientific expertise in Earth observation and validated analytics with Xoople’s scalable Earth data platform, AI capabilities and enterprise integrations.

Together, we will develop solutions that turn satellite observations into decision-ready insights for areas such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, supply-chain traceability, infrastructure intelligence and climate risk.

As Inge Neven (CEO of VITO) and Fabrizio Pirondini (CEO of Xoople) highlight, the ambition is clear: bridge the gap between world-class Earth observation science and operational decision making.

Congratulations to Val Maverick Abecia, who successfully defended his VITO/KU Leuven PhD on 31 August 2026! 🎓

His research explored how naturally occurring radionuclides behave in geothermal systems, with a particular focus on how organic matter influences their mobility and accumulation.

By combining samples from VITO’s deep geothermal installation in Mol with laboratory experiments and geochemical modelling, his work provides valuable insights for safer and more sustainable geothermal operations.

The findings can support improved monitoring, safer waste management and better radiation protection in geothermal and other subsurface applications.

The new European DIGICAP project aims to make medical device certification faster, more predictable and more efficient through digitalisation.

As Technical Lead, VITO is helping develop and test new digital solutions, including open standards, interoperable systems and the use of AI and automation under human supervision.

The goal: a more harmonised certification process that helps safe and innovative medical technologies reach patients faster.

How can Europe turn world class research into market impact faster and at greater scale? 🌍

Last week, VITO joined imec, VIB and Flanders Make for the second high level forum between the CEOs of Flanders’ Strategic Research Centres and Flemish Members of the European Parliament.

Discussions focused on the policy choices that will shape Europe’s innovation capacity, including the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028 to 2034, the Chip Act, Circular Economy Act, Biotech Act, technology infrastructures, and stronger conditions for start ups and scale ups.

Europe has the knowledge, infrastructure and innovation capacity. The challenge is bringing innovation to market faster and at scale, across one truly European market.

The key ingredients for this transition are speed, scale, smart specialisation and collaboration.🤝
