IMPRESSIVE WINS FOR VALVERDE AND MIGON AT LA INDOMABLE

The Spanish UCI Gravel race in Berja-Almeria this weekend saw great battles on a course in reverse order compared to last year. The 96km track in between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Nevada mountain range towards an altitude of 2100m was hard and fitted pure climbers.

Valverde, on the brink of his 44th birthday, replicated his victory from 2023 by finishing 44 seconds ahead of mountain biker Hugo Drechou from France, with Portugal's Tiago Oliveira Ferreira finishing third, two minutes behind.

In the women's race, Karolina Migon from Poland outpaced last year's champion, Carolin Schiff of Germany, by nearly two minutes. Danish cyclist Klara Sofie Skovgaard Hansen claimed the third spot, trailing another two minutes behind.

There was also a shorter 51km distance as qualifier for the men over 60 and women over 50.

The event witnessed significant participation growth, attracting over 1000 riders from the gravel and mountain biking communities, a substantial increase from the 600 participants last year.

SCHÖNBERGER AND BORGHESI TO IMPRESS IN WOERTHERSEE GRAVEL
The inaugural UCI Gravel race in Austria, held over the weekend in Velden-am-Woerthersee, proved to be an astounding success. The event boasted a challenging course that showcased the breathtaking beauty of at the Woerthersee lake.
Months of anticipation culminated in a remarkable achievement as the organizers made the strategic decision to cap participation at 1200 riders for this inaugural edition. Their foresight proved prescient as the event sold out a full month before the starting gun sounded.
With an impressive time of 04:00:23.3, Austrian Sebastian Schönberger secured the first place at the debut edition of the Wörthersee Gravel Race. Second place goes to Paul Voß from Germany. The third-place spot is claimed by Belgian Daan Soete.
The fastest woman, with a time of 04:28:36.3, is Giada Borghesi from Italy, followed by Geerike Schreurs from the Netherlands. Third place goes to Carolin Schiff from Germany.
With this event, the 2024 TREK UCI Gravel World Series has been launched leading up to the UCI Gravel World Championships which will take place in between Halle and Leuven (Belgium) later in October.

INAUGURAL WOERTHERSEE GRAVEL EVENT REACHES CAPACITY

The first UCI Gravel race in Austria being held this weekend in Velden-am-Woerthersee has been designed by former pro rider and M40 UCI Gravel World Champion Johnny Hoogerland who created a course with start and finish in his hometown at the Woerthersee lake.

The organizers decided to limit the number of participants for this first edition to 1000 announcing a complete sell-out one month ahead of the event.
The 49km lap needs to be done three times for the elites and younger categories while the older age groups finish after two laps. Along the course there is a 2km steep climb with parts up to 20% and another less steep climb a few kilometres before the finish line. Much of the route meanders along the scenic Grau river.
The race welcomes a selection of real gravel specialists as Johnny gets competition from Daniel Oss, Mattia de marchi, Paul Voss, Sebastian Schonberger, Jan Bakelants, Peter Vakoc and his compatriots Jasper Ockeloen, Laurens ten Dam and Ivar Slik in the men’s race while Tessa Neefjes, Carolin Schiff and Geerike Schreurs have signed up for the women’s category in this first race in the 2024 TREK UCI Gravel World Series.

GORILLA GRAVEL IN RWANDA ON THE FAMOUS 1000 HILLS
The first UCI Gravel race Rwanda announces to be an exciting event in which riders can evaluate a part of the 2025 UCI Road World Championships course starting in Kigali.
The organizer is Belgian who loves the country and shows the beauty of it all in this first UCI gravel race in the country. Time to explore the course together with Simon De Schutter who has already a lot of experience with mountain bike events in Rwanda.
Simon, as we look at the map and plan, it seems like a hard race: 108km with 2685m of elevation?
Simon: Yes, you can consider this a hard race. On the map, the roads seem to be more than half paved, but those so called “paved” roads are district roads who are in reality also well-maintained gravel roads. I think that apart from the first 10km leaving the city, the course is for 99% on gravel.”
Those first 10km are in Kigali where the 2025 road World Championships take place for the first time on African soil?
Simon: Yes, a great moment for African cycling and especially Rwanda. We recently decided to also adapt our course so that it follows the track of road worlds next year. A great opportunity to check out the course in the country that is known for its 1000 hills.”
Once you leave the capital city, we are in the countryside which is I presume very different from Kigali?
Simon: “Kigali is a very modern city where you have all facilities, great asphalt, and the fastest internet in the world. Outside people will for sure encourage the riders in a very disciplined way, but in those remote areas, it will be less crowded with small villages and gravel roads going from one hill to the next one. Rwanda is really a super beautiful country and one of the safest in Africa. And even on the countryside, the 4G network is great.”
Are the gravel roads well maintained?
Simon: “They are totally different than the gravel races you see in Europe as we are racing on the wide-open roads which are used for normal traffic. After the rain season, which is April and May, it might be that certain parts needs maintenance so I would suggest wide tyres to cope with the washboard effect we often see in that period of the year.”
What can we expect from temperatures?
Simon: “The start will be at 8am in the morning when you can expect a temperature around 23 degrees. Some riders will be finished before it gets really hot at 1pm, but some slower riders will still be on course with temperatures going over 30 Celsius in the afternoon.”
Even on the high altitude as the finish is at 2200m?
Simon: “yes, even there and the finish will be challenging as the last section going up from the town of Base will be 3.5km on real asphalt, followed by a steep last 4.5km to the finish on hard gravel.”
Which riders are already confirmed?
Simon: “We have British Maddy Nutt confirmed, but also Belgian cycling TV-host Ruben van Gucht and his co-commentator Ine Beyen will take part. The numbers are growing steadily, and we hope to have a great peloton at the start in which we will also see a lot of local talents.”

Interview with Antonio Scarpitti on the exciting new UCI Gravel Race in Sardinia
The upcoming Giro Sardegna Gravel promises a thrilling experience for riders of all levels. Held amidst the picturesque backdrop of the island, this event offers a perfect blend of hospitality and challenging gravel tracks. We caught up with organizer Antonio Scarpitti, known as Tonino, to learn more about what participants can expect.
Could you tell us about the race venue and accommodations?
Tonino: The race kicks off right in front of the Marina Beach hotel, a luxurious four-star establishment. Participants can take advantage of special registration offers that include full board. It's incredibly convenient as the race both starts and finishes at the hotel, eliminating any unnecessary stress.
How would you describe the course? Is it challenging?
Tonino: The course begins with a 12.8km start loop on smooth national roads, providing riders with an opportunity to position themselves before hitting the gravel sections. The main loop spans 41km and features some demanding terrain, including climbs and descents. Riders will tackle this loop two or three times before returning to the finish line.
What can riders expect during the start loop?
Tonino: The start loop offers a smooth introduction to the race, with wide roads allowing for easy overtaking. There's a climb early on, but it's balanced out by a descent as we head towards sea level to begin the main loop.
And what about the gravel sections?
Tonino: The gravel sections start directly for the initial 8 kilometres of the main loop, presenting riders with a challenging ascent. This is followed by a mix of paved roads with rolling hills, culminating in the highest point of the course at 225 meters above sea level. While the middle section consists of 14km on asphalt, the remainder of the course is back on gravel.
Will riders get to experience the beach?
Tonino: We're still finalizing whether the route will traverse the sandy shoreline or stick to the adjacent paths. Regardless, participants will enjoy scenic views of the beach and sea before venturing into the tranquil Parc Naturel, characterized by flat terrain and pine forests. The final stretch of each loop includes a brief stint on asphalt.
How will the races be structured?
Tonino: We've opted to stagger the start times, with elite and younger categories commencing in the morning for three laps. Later in the afternoon, older categories, including men over 60 and women over 50, will tackle two laps. The podium ceremonies will take place in the hotel's theatre, adding a touch of grandeur to the event.
We wish you the best of luck with the final preparations!
