For the past ten years we have supported emerging artists by giving them the opportunity to present their work in and around the Beursschouwburg in Brussels. De voorbije 10 jaar ondersteunden we opkomende kunstenaars door hen de kans te bieden hun werk te tonen in en rond de Beursschouwburg te Brussel. Bâtard est un festival qui a, ces dix dernières années, soutenu des artistes émergents en leur offrant l’opportunité de présenter leur travail au Beursschouwburg à Bruxelles.

Bâtard is looking for a new artistic direction!
Always a platform, sometimes a festival, Bâtard has been a breeding ground for artistic development and experimentation in Brussels, Belgium and abroad for 20 years. After 5 years with the current team, fostering artistic experimentation and community engagement, Bâtard is now transitioning to a new phase.

𝑰𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒆’𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓?

We are looking for one or more people who want to shape the future of Bâtard while in some way continuing the existing links with the community of artists and partners. Bâtard has always had a team of curators, and we would like to stay away from an individual direction. Nevertheless you can apply on your own (and then be potentially teamed up with other applicants) or apply as a team or collective already.

The current team can assure a handover of skills, knowledge and network. There is a limited budget available as remuneration for writing the new dossier.

We invite you to reach out to us in whatever format you feel is the most fitting to express your vision for Bâtard. We would like to know who you are, how you perceive Bâtard, what it represents for you and where you want to take it next. Written texts should be no longer than 1 A4, other formats ideally take a maximum of 10 minutes to receive.

The last day of Bâtard flew by in the blink of an eye, leaving a trail of sparkly dust in its wake. A Houdini-like trick and there we were, dancing away the final hours to the closing saluting cheers and the farewell tears.

With a gut punch of a closing piece by Stephanie Kayal, a duo performance involuntarily turned into a one woman show, her partner Abed Kobeissy having to stay in Beirut with his family amid the ongoing war-inflicted horrors. Mustaf Ahmeti delivered once again with his immersive futuristic show. A short films projection curated by (.tv) and a celebration party Bastards One More Time that reunited old and new Bastards.

Last night, we travelled back and forth between Jamaïca, Europe and Congo with the moving musical storytelling of 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞, set to reggae rhythms and monochrome images. The dynamic duo 𝐁𝐚𝐦𝐁𝐚𝐦 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐲𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐎̈𝐬𝐭𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐞́ put on their show for the second time in the premises of Beursschouwburg.

Bastards unite for the penultimate evening of Bâtard, with a 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆 musical interlude by Aziza and her softly raspy voice, a 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆 video installation by 𝐒𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐢 (Maqam.tv) and the sold out performance of 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟 𝐀𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢.

The selected films tell tales of liberty, refusal and resistance. All three film works stand at the extremities of the image making machine through, inter alia, their formats, their narrations, their subjects and their objects. They will be preceded with a short intervention by Sophia Attigui dwelling on the ways by which filmmakers of the Global South must sanitize, smoothen, filter, regulate, revise, rectify their languages to meet Western (now turned universal) standards of film development, production and dissemination.

Jamshid Aminfar is a painter, forced to work on the streets of Tehran but determined to pursue the art he loves despite constant interruption and hassle from officials and the public. With the help of his friends he prepares for an exhibition. Aminfar’s animated paintings are talking about his inner life, dreams, nightmares and memories…ghaem

⇝ ‘Si Mohamed’ directed by Salim Bayzou - Morocco, 25’, 2016 (french subtitles)
Si Mohamed and his family of 6 live in extreme poverty and share a single room within a large house located in the old medina of Salé. Often, Si Mohamed runs away from his environment until he is found and brought back to his home.

⇝ ‘Untitled Life Experience’ directed by Grocco a.k.a. Trick54 - Morocco, 17’, 2022 (english and arabic subtitles)
The story of the film tells the experience of a young Moroccan from a modest background and underprivileged environment, who invested his human capital, his potential, and more, into his art although at the end, he finds himself in the street and without any income. Even in this situation of homelessness, in total isolation from the art world, he works on keeping his mental balance and creativity.

Bâtard had its last opening 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 last night, a stirring joy every edition, shared with all of the attending Bastards. As the timeline gets bleaker with each passing day, the need for community and collective resilience swells consequently, and those sweet moments of togetherness reverberate even more loudly.

We are 𝘚𝘖 back.
Or maybe at least 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 for a new edition. The very 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 edition to be precise ⦍*audible gasps*⦎.

Back in September, we hosted a sober part one of Bâtard 2024, opting to step back from the usual extravaganza for a more intimate setting, a meaningful choice to give space to activist voices in these times of doom-charged narratives and enhanced need for community. Well, we’re obviously still stuck in a reality with impending-end-of-the-world kinda vibes, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 for this last edition we’re striving to offer you a series finale worthy of its previous installments.

After five years under the helm of curating duo Sabine Cmelniski and Bouchra Lamsyeh, Bâtard will soon change form again with the artistic vision of a new creative direction. Five years of fabulous tardiness, unpaid labour, nervous breakdowns, money shortages, pessoptimistic energy, fake-it–’til-you-make-it ethos, Bâtard went on to become a peculiar layering of spatialities, a 2020’s heterotopia for disillusioned Millennials and Gen Z’s, our very own timezone in an undivided space to reflect, assemble, dream together.
And so the Scooby Gang is reuniting to prepare a lasting ending, an homage to Bâtard’s shape-shifting essence and a final act of marking its name in indelible ink.

Friends and foes, hardcore followers, one-time lovers, from liquids to the other site, and so we are back for one last big hurrah to celebrate the end of Bâtard as we know it, what is to come, what has passed, and what will remain.
