As part of our strategic collaboration with Seequent , we invite you to join a free webinar exploring the critical role geologists play in improving the safety and long-term management of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs).

Tailings facilities are among the highest-consequence geotechnical structures in the mining sector, and their safety depends fundamentally on strong geological understanding. This session will examine how integrated digital workflows, subsurface data, and 3D geological modelling can strengthen collaboration between geologists and engineers, supporting safer and more accountable tailings management practices.

The webinar will be led by Khaled Zahran, a geotechnical and tailings specialist with international experience across tailings dams, civil infrastructure, and ground improvement projects in North and Latin America and the UAE.

📅 10 June 2026
⏰ 14:30–15:00 CEST

EurGeol title holders can obtain CPD points by attending the full webinar.

The European Federation of Geologists is proud to announce the election of Christian Masurenko as its new Vice-President, following the 88th EFG Council Meeting in Milos, Greece.

Christian is a senior geologist and mining executive with more than 25 years of international experience spanning exploration, mining, ESG, and responsible resource management. He has led multi-billion USD mining and infrastructure projects across Africa, Europe, and South America, serving in executive roles as CEO, project manager, and strategic advisor. His areas of expertise encompass critical raw materials, feasibility studies, environmental and social governance, community relations, and sustainable supply chains. He is qualified to act as Competent Person under JORC, NI43-101, and PERC standards.

Within the professional geosciences community, Christian has served as a member of the EFG Regulation Authority and currently chairs the Geoethics & International Cooperation Forum of EFG's German member, the BDG, as well as representing BDG on the PERC committee. Beyond his professional activities, he is actively engaged in mentoring, business development within professional associations, and voluntary community work, guided throughout by a commitment to fair, responsible, and transparent resource development.

We look forward to Christian's contribution to the Federation's leadership as it continues to implement the 2023–2027 EFG Strategy. Warm congratulations, Christian, and sincere thanks to outgoing Vice-President Iris Vukovic for six years of outstanding service.

Deadline extended!

The European Federation of Geologists and the Société géologique de France have extended the application deadline for the travel grants for the conference LearnGeo 2026 to 26 May.

This call is open to French-speaking Bachelor's and Master's students who wish to participate in LearnGeo 2026, taking place on 17-18 June 2026 in Pau, France. Three participants will be selected, each receiving up to €330 to support travel and accommodation costs. Participation in the event itself is free of charge.

The programme offers a valuable platform to engage with geoscience professionals and educators, gain insights into applied geoscience careers, and expand professional network at the European level: https://learngeo26.eurogeologists.eu/programme

Applicants are required to submit a motivation letter, a CV, proof of student status, and an estimate of travel and accommodation costs.

As part of our strategic collaboration with Seequent*, we are pleased to share the following post:

Managing over 3,000km of tunnels requires a shift from reactive maintenance to proactive, data-driven management.

For Italy's motorway network, this meant building a "digital twin" of its tunnel assets. By centralising historical and new monitoring data, engineers could analyse structural health and make informed, sustainable management decisions.

As part of our strategic collaboration with Seequent*, we share the following post:

Why is a deep understanding of the subsurface critical for modern infrastructure projects?

Failing to properly investigate and model ground conditions leads to budget overruns, project delays, and increased safety risks. Subsurface insight is not an option; it is a necessity for resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

Learn why seeing beneath the surface is reshaping how we design and build.

We are delighted to welcome UniLaSalle as a Gold Sponsor of LearnGeo 2026!

UniLaSalle is a French educational institution with a geosciences tradition dating back over 150 years. It is a polytechnic institute that resulted from the merger of five engineering schools and the creation of a veterinary school. At the heart of the challenges of transition, it is designing a new generation of “Grandes Ecoles” that unite life, earth, environmental and energy sciences with industrial sciences and digital technologies.

Through the Geosciences programme at UniLaSalle, students engage with topics such as energy transition, environmental protection, natural hazard mitigation, mineral resources, and water security.

As an event dedicated to geoscience education and careers, we are proud to have UniLaSalle standing alongside us at LearnGeo 2026, and we sincerely thank them for their support and continued investment in shaping the future of geoscience education in Europe.

Join Maureen Gallagher, EFG Global Ambassador, for a hands-on short course at the 12th Meggen Raw Material Days: "From Science to Decisions: A Hands-On Public Affairs Lab for Geoscientists", taking place on 18 September 2026 in Lennestadt, Germany.

Designed for geoscientists, researchers, and professionals in the raw materials sector, this interactive course will explore how to translate scientific expertise into effective communication for policymakers, stakeholders, communities, and the public.

Participants will work directly with their own scientific papers, projects, or technical products to develop practical communication materials, including:

- A one-page policy brief
- A draft response to a public consultation
- A short-form public communication piece

Through guided exercises, live demonstrations, and iterative feedback, participants will strengthen their communication and engagement skills while learning how to navigate complex conversations surrounding raw materials, mining, and geoscience.

As part of our strategic collaboration with Seequent*, we share the following article published in the European Geologist Journal, exploring how integrated geoscience solutions can help turn complexity into confidence in geothermal projects.

Geothermal energy is gaining recognition as a secure, renewable energy source central to the global energy transition. Yet the road from exploration to production is marked by significant challenges. Unlike solar and wind, geothermal potential must be inferred through interdisciplinary interpretation of geological, geophysical, and geochemical data, demanding a robust, integrated understanding of the subsurface at every stage.

Seequent's integrated software solutions, including Leapfrog Energy, Volsung, MX Deposit, and Central, support geothermal professionals in reducing uncertainty, improving decision-making, and managing projects with clarity and confidence throughout their full lifecycle.
