Halaqat

Halaqat The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by Goethe-Institut. And how do people deal with this?

Exploring cultural links between Europe and the Arab world

Europe and the Arab world are two rapidly changing regions, each with specific and varied local social, economic and political realities, but above all with many connections, historical and present. Building on these connections, the Goethe-Institut and Bozar are launching the project Halaqat. Halaqat – which in Arabic means multiple link

s and circles – aims to strengthen these entanglements and build bridges between both regions. Diverse voices of emerging and renowned artists, cultural actors and experts are brought together to approach a number of themes from their own perspective. Going beyond the idea of a simple invitation, Halaqat aims to stimulate the artists from both regions to create art together. With 'Politics of Spaces and Bodies' as their leitmotiv, they tell stories of power, limitation and impact over spaces and bodies, a theme that remains highly topical. What is the place of public and private space in both regions and in the different countries? How will we soon experience physical and digital space? The notion of bodies, in turn, relates to issues of gender, power, bodily contact, mobility and the role of body language. Can we continue to cooperate and listen to each other in this time of pandemic - when mobility is not only limited by visas, but also by all kinds of sanitary measures? These are just some of the topics that Halaqat will be addressing in the coming months, without claiming to have a definitive answer or solution. Each question might give way to a new issue or chapter, which Europe and the Arab world will continue to write together, towards a future influenced by artists from both regions. We invite you to join us at events at Bozar and all over Brussels: from public discussions, film screenings, over concerts and performances, to visual arts exhibitions. A festival in the autumn of 2022 will conclude this inspiring Halaqat project. Local Halaqat partners in Brussels and in the Arab world:
• Film: Atelier Graphoui, Cinemaximiliaan and NAAS - Network of Arab Alternative Screens
• Media arts: iMAL and Cairotronica
• Music: Werkplaats Walter and Amman Jazz Festival
• Performance: La Bellone, Théâtre Marni and Studio 8 - Curator : Nedjma Hadj Benchelabi

Halaqat started in 2021 as a grant co-financed by the European Union (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. The project was implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar from 01.02.2021 until 31.01.2023. Halaqat continues in 2023 with its own funds and with activities in Europe and in the Arab worlds. Its contents are the sole responsibility of the organisers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union.

✨Introducing the selected projects in Morocco
From publishing to embodied choreographic research, these granted projects from Morocco reflect on care as a political, collective, and deeply physical practice.

✨ “On Her Back” by Mohamed Bouriri is a contemporary dance piece inspired by the invisible labour and silent endurance carried by mothers and caregivers. Through movement, repetition, and physical weight, the work reflects on care as an embodied act of resistance and survival.

✨ “TAMO #2” by Kulte Editions is the second issue of a multilingual feminist magazine bringing together essays, poetry, visual arts, and film around the theme of care. Through collaborative and multidisciplinary contributions, the publication explores care in relation to gender, ecology, labour, and collective life.

Through publishing, choreography, and collective artistic practice, these projects invite us to rethink care as something lived, shared, and continuously carried.

✨Introducing the selected projects in Morocco
Through movement, memory, and collective presence, these granted projects from Morocco reflect on resistance, interdependence, and the traces bodies carry across time.

✨ “LINK, PEOPLE” by Mehdi Dahkan / Cie Jil Z is a choreographic work exploring collective marching as both a political and physical act. The piece reflects on what it means to move together, to support and be supported, and to exist within shared forces larger than the individual.

✨ “Five Gestures Against Oblivion” by Rim Mejdi is a five-channel video installation weaving together memories of dark times with gestures and dances from the present, creating an ode to resilient voices and bodies.

Through choreography, film, and installation, these projects engage with care as collective memory, resistance, and embodied connection.

✨Introducing the selected projects in Morocco
From sound archives and spiritual singing to deeply personal storytelling through rap — these three granted projects from Morocco explore memory, identity, healing, and return through music and sound.

✨ “Return” by Saad Elbaraka reflects on the emotional and fragmented experience of returning home through field recordings, conversations, and sonic narratives.

✨ “MADRE” by Nezar revisits motherhood as a space of memory, love, resilience, and emotional inheritance through contemporary rap and Moroccan influences.

✨ “Saken” by Hasan Abouqqi draws from Moroccan hadra traditions and healing rituals to explore music as a space for vulnerability, transformation, and reconnection with the self.

Through distinct artistic languages, these projects engage with care as memory, transmission, spirituality, and emotional belonging.

Stay tuned for more details!

🔸Halaqat Talks Series
Decentering Narratives: Women's Voices and Cultural Transmission

15.05.2026, at 18:30 pm Rabat time. Taking place at Tassarout

🔸The participatory round table “Decentering Narratives: Women’s Voices and Cultural Transmission” brings together artists and participants to explore how women’s voices shape cultural transmission beyond dominant narratives. Through a participatory and feminist approach, the exchange opens a collective space to reflect on visibility, memory, care, and the often invisible contributions of women in artistic and cultural fields.
The conversation will be facilitated by Dr. Yousra El Barrad, a feminist researcher and facilitator working on gender, participation, and social justice, together with Nezha Rhondali, who engages with participatory practices such as Contact Improvisation and initiatives like Irtijal, Derdek, and Tassarout, exploring dance as a tool for collective empowerment and critical inquiry.
It will also feature contributions from Sahar El Echi, a multidisciplinary artist working on memory and identity, and Amira Lamti, a visual artist whose practice engages with narrative, space, and representation.

At residency, artists explore parenthood and caregiving as part of their creative practice.
Rooted in a welcoming environment for both artists and children, the residency opens space for reflection, exchange, and collective care.

✨ Meet the resident artists:

📚 Imen Zarrouk — a Tunisian artist and writer whose work explores motherhood, memory, and language through her trilingual project *Abécédaire*.

🎶Alia Tag — a Cairo-based dance therapist, movement artist, singer-songwriter, and mother, whose work engages decolonized embodiment, care, and socially engaged artistic practice.

✒️ Saena Delacroix-Sadighiyan — an Iranian and French calligrapher, sociologist, and mother, whose practice moves through identity, exile, attachment, and hybridity across research and artistic creation.

Together, their practices create a shared space where care, parenting, and artistic expression meet—not as separate worlds, but as deeply connected ways of being and creating.
