Report Game 1 - Belgium vs Sweden
Belgium National Team comes through in the clutch, upends Sweden National Team, 5-4.
Jordy VAN DEN HEUVEL brought a good stuff against Sweden during his outing. Sweden managed just two hits off of VAN DEN HEUVEL, who allowed no earned runs, walked two and struck out one during his five innings of work.
The top of the first Sweden took an early lead, 1-0. They got things going when Joel JOHNSON doubled. A passed ball then moved JOHNSON from second to third.
Sweden pushed one run across in each of the third and fourth. In the third, they scored on a groundout by Daniel JOHNSON, scoring Victor CRONELD.
Yannick GONTIER came three inning relief and did an outstanding job to prevent Sweden from extending their lead. He did gave up a solo shot in the eight. Robbe DE JONGH pitched one inning in relief and allowed no runs to get the win for Belgium.
Belgium scored one run in the sixth inning on a groundout by Tim VERAGHTERT, plating Dennis DE QUINT. It didn't take long for them to answer as they scored three runs again in the eighth. Belgium scored on an RBI single by Sam BOERMANS, an RBI single by VERAGHTERT, and a bases loaded walk by Robin ROEVENS.
Steven DE LANNOY walked to get on base in the ninth. He then went from first to second on a groundout by Benjamin DILLE. DE LANNOY stole third base and scored on a wild throw from the catcher to win the ballgame. Nicklas MELIN was the game's losing pitcher with 1 1/3 innings pitched, walked two, struck out one, and allowed one run.
Belgium brought home the winning run to give them the lead in the ninth inning, as they hung on to beat Sweden 5-4 on Wednesday in the first game of the Flanders Invitational Baseball Tournament.
RIBBENS, DE LANNOY, DE QUINT and BOERMANS led Belgium's offensive threat, as they got multiple basehit game.
