🚲 Time for our annual bikers’ breakfast!

In our beautiful Verlat Hall, all colleagues who cycle to work were treated to a well-deserved breakfast buffet: fresh fruit, yoghurt, muesli, bread and – to hit that post-ride sweet spot – mini Berliners with jam.

On the Flamingo Square, everyone enjoyed those delicacies together with a stunning view of Antwerp Central Station. The only downside of this ever-so-photogenic backdrop? We could only fit one table into the frame. Trust us, there were plenty more cyclists happily nibbling away just outside the picture! 😄

On the first floor of A Room with a ZOO’s Historical Wing, tucked behind the swirling staircases of the ZOOgallery, you’ll find our Stanley Room.

Named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), the journalist and explorer famous for his search for missionary David Livingstone, this setting combines charm and versatility for up to 110 guests.

From cocktail receptions and training sessions to networking events, it’s all possible here. You’ll love the abundant natural light, the warm wooden floors and the beautiful view of Antwerp ZOO’s garden. During your coffee break, make sure to look outside and embark on a small expedition of your own: spotting the pink flamingos below. 🤓

Last week, experts from across Europe gathered at A Room with a ZOO for the 7th European Conservation Genetics Meeting. Their goal: to explore how genetic and genomic data can guide conservation and help protect biodiversity for future generations. 🧬

Alongside a rich scientific programme, participants enjoyed a variety of interactive activities, including poster sessions, a mentorship lunch, an educational card game and the art exhibition ‘Evolving Narratives’.

But conservation is not only at the heart of this congress; it reflects our work as a venue as well. Did you know that every event hosted at A Room with a ZOO directly supports our Foundation? From small meetings to international conferences, every euro spent here contributes to animal welfare, scientific research and conservation projects.

Watch our Atrium come to life for another memorable evening at A Room with a ZOO. 🎥

As students returned to school today, our cleaning team did some learning of their own. 🤓

They attended a special training session, led by Monumentenwacht, on how to care for A Room with a ZOO’s historic halls and art collection. From bronze sculptures and marble busts to awe-inspiring portraits, every piece deserves expert care.

Some key takeaways:

Armed with microfibre cloths and make-up brushes, our team is ready to help preserve and protect our unique heritage for generations to come.

Ever wondered how you clean a Panamarenko? 👀

Hint: it’s a little more complicated than grabbing a cloth and a bucket of water.

Recently, two experienced art conservators took a closer look at ‘Brazil’ in our ZOOgallery. After a thorough condition assessment, they started removing surface dust with gloves and soft brushes with taped handles to prevent accidental scratches.

The next step? A careful test with demineralised water. Once approved, the sculpture could be cleaned using as little water as possible and a pH-neutral detergent.

Not an easy task, especially considering ‘Brazil’ is suspended around 20 metres above the ground.

Precision at the highest level, and not just literally. Next time you’re at A Room with a ZOO, feel free to admire Brazil’s renewed sparkle, brought back one brushstroke at a time. ✨

🐢 Our Galápagos Room was named after the islands that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Even though there’s not a tortoise in sight (that we know of), this light and spacious hall provides the perfect backdrop for inspiring lectures, workshops, cocktail receptions and more.

Just try not to get too distracted by the stunning herringbone floor, the sweeping staircases of the ZOOgallery, the excellent views of Antwerp ZOO, or the jaw-dropping whale skeleton in the neighbouring Darwin Hall...

An elephant, a rhino, a bear… In the Bugatti Room, you’re always surrounded by animals. Animal sculptures, that is. 🐘

This gorgeous boardroom, dating back to 1953, is named after Italian sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti. (Not after the automobile manufacturer. That was his brother Ettore.) The exotic animals of Antwerp ZOO became a major source of inspiration for Rembrandt’s work.

Step inside and you’ll discover the golden glow of warm wooden panelling, rich terracotta walls and a breathtaking ceiling. With space for up to 40 guests, it’s the ideal setting for board meetings, executive gatherings and other high-level events.

Looking for real animals? Walk down the stairs, past the grand piano, and say hi to the flamingos of Antwerp ZOO just beyond the square.

History, art and nature intertwine in our Verlat Hall. This magnificent room in pink and white marble pays tribute to Charles Verlat, the Belgian painter renowned for his extraordinary animal paintings. Fittingly, he found much of his inspiration and study material at Antwerp ZOO. 🐂

Large-scale works by Verlat adorn the towering walls, competing for your attention with the equally monumental marble staircase. Together, they create a timelessly elegant setting for cocktail parties and walking dinners.

Combine your event here with a pleasant stroll through the Winter Garden next door, a lush tropical oasis within Antwerp ZOO. In spring and summer, you’ll be accompanied by hundreds of butterflies! And if the weather is particularly nice, then you and your guests can enjoy part of the covered terrace overlooking Flamingo Square.

While some much-needed rain showers brought relief during these hot summer days, they also revealed a sneaky surprise: a leak in the Atrium roof. 💧

Equipped with safety gear and generously covered in sunscreen, we headed up onto the glass roof to investigate. After identifying the cause, we carried out a temporary fix and scheduled the permanent repairs.

And since rooftop repairs don’t often make it onto our to-do list (it’s a pretty decent roof, after all), we took a brief moment afterwards to enjoy this rare office view over Antwerp. 😉
