Guiding Pakistan to their second world title with a dazzling victory in the 2009 T20 World Cup, he etched his name in the annals of the sport. As the first Pakistani batsman to breach the 10,000 Test runs milestone, he set a benchmark of excellence. No other Pakistani batsman has surpassed his record of Test centuries, nor have they matched his prowess in scoring away centuries.

In the vibrant tapestry of cricket history, he etched his name as the second Sri Lankan to score a century on his Test debut, dazzling with an unbeaten 132 against Australia in 1992. His innings sparkled with 26 boundaries, a prelude to his future brilliance. Yet, it wasn't until 1996 that his true potential was unleashed. Teaming up with Sanath Jayasuriya, they revolutionized the ODI batting approach, fearlessly attacking bowlers from both ends right from the start. This dynamic duo redefined power play strategies, leaving an indelible mark on the game.

But his heroics didn't end there. In the 1996 World Cup semifinal, he executed the most game-changing stumping in Sri Lankan cricket history, dismissing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and altering the course of the match.

Gary Kirsten, who coached India to victory in the 2011 World Cup, was previously a distinguished South African cricketer. He once held the South African records for the most international runs and centuries. Notably, his unbeaten 188 against the UAE during the 1996 World Cup was a record at the time. Over his 101 Test match career, Kirsten scored 7,289 runs with 21 centuries, and in ODI cricket, he amassed 6,798 runs with 13 centuries. Impressively, he maintained an average of 40 or higher in both formats. Today, we celebrate the 57th birthday of former South African opening batsman Gary Kirsten.
